Sturges Named Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week, Quinn Defensive Player of the Week

From the Gettysburg College Website:

Posted on 09/24/2006

LANCASTER, Pa. - Junior tailback Tom Sturges (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) has been named Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week, and sophomore defensive end Conor Quinn (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) has been named Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week in an announcement made by the conference on Sunday. Sturges carried the ball 31 times for 186 yards and a touchdown, while Quinn made four tackles, including a sack for a loss of 10 yards. On the play, he forced and recovered a fumble as well to help Gettysburg to a 31-14 win over Denison in non-conference action on Saturday.

Junior quarterback Hunter McMillan (Middletown, Del./Wilmington Friends) was also named to the CC weekly honor roll as a special teams player after recovering a fumbled punt that set up the Bullets' fourth touchdown late in the first half.

For the third straight week, the conference's outstanding offensive performer has come from Gettysburg. Last week, freshman quarterback Matt Flynn (Northfield, N.J./Mainland Regional) was named Offensive Player of the Week after coming on in relief and tying the school record with five touchdown passes. That effort earned his first career start on Saturday, and he continued his solid performance, completing 13 of 23 passes for 163 yards and three more touchdowns. Over a five-quarter span from the beginning of the second quarter at Rochester to halftime against Denison, he threw for eight touchdowns, which leads the conference.

On Saturday, Sturges, who also was named Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 10, plunged in from two yards out on Gettysburg's first possession to tie the game at 7-7. Earlier on the drive, he broke free for a career-long 53-yard rush that put him over 2,000 yards for his career. He is just the seventh Bullet to reach that plateau. By the end of the game, he had passed Paul Martin (2,053 - 1982-85) for sixth place on Gettysburg's career rushing list.

On the season, Sturges has 548 yards rushing on 98 carries to average 5.6 yards per rush. He has scored three touchdowns and leads the Centennial Conference in rushing with 137.0 yards per game. He is also the conference's leader in all-purpose yards with 179.2 yards per outing, having piled up 135 yards in kickoff returns and 34 yards receiving. Entering the Denison game, Sturges ranked 18th in the nation in all-purpose yards and 20th in rushing.

Quinn made his first career start at defensive end on Saturday and collected a career-high four stops. Early in the second quarter with the Bullets up 14-7 and the Big Red driving, Quinn hit Denison sophomore quarterback Brian Herbe will he was attempting to pass. The ball came loose, and Quinn recovered it for his first career sack, forced fumble and fumble recovery. The Gettysburg offense took advantage and embarked on an eight-play, 74-yard drive that resulted in Flynn's 12-yard touchdown pass to senior halfback Dusty Green (Idaville, Pa./Bermudian Springs), putting the Bullets up 21-7.

Gettysburg will be off this weekend and will return to action with the 2006 Centennial Conference opener on Saturday, Oct. 7 at McDaniel. Kickoff at Scott S. Bair Stadium is set for 1 p.m.

Young quarterback guides Bullets

Young quarterback guides Bullets

Sunday, September 24, 2006

BY BOB BLACK Of The Patriot-News

GETTYSBURG - When you see the bloody gash on the middle of Matt Flynn's chin, you're not sure whether it's a football scar or a remnant from his first time shaving.

The 19-year-old Gettysburg freshman quarterback looks that young -- until he walks on the football field.

That's when he turns into a veteran. After coming on in relief to throw a school-record five touchdowns in a loss last week, he came back with three more yesterday to lead the Bullets to a 31-14 victory over Denison at Musselman Stadium's Shirk Field.

"It helps to have experienced people in there with you," said Flynn, who threw a pair of touchdown passes to junior Dusty Green and another to senior Spencer Davidson. It was Flynn's first starting assignment in four games for the Bullets.

Gettysburg's other touchdown came from junior tailback Tom Sturges, who went over 2,000 career yards rushing with a 186-yard performance that included a 2-yard game-tying score early in the first half.

In addition to throwing for 163 yards, Flynn gained 26 yards on the ground, three times dodging sacks to pick up first downs.

"He knows what to do with the football and plays smart," said Gettysburg coach Barry Streeter, whose Bullets evened their record at 2-2 heading into an off week before starting Centennial Conference play.

Denison (0-3) started out looking like it would continue Gettysburg's defensive problems of last week, when the Bullets relinquished 54 points to Rochester. The Big Red returned a short opening kickoff to its own 38, and three plays later 231-pound beef back Fred Lee lumbered 53 yards for a touchdown with less than two minutes gone.

Gettysburg used an opening drive of its own, highlighted by Sturges' 53-yard run to the Denison 10 to set up his 2-yard TD plunge.

"Our line was giving great run and pass blocking today," Sturges said. "And on that play they opened a nice hole on the right side."

In addition to the running of Sturges, the passing of Flynn and the receiving of Green, who caught seven balls for 95 yards including 7- and 12-yard touchdowns, Gettysburg's defense stepped up after that opening Denison touchdown.

After Gettysburg upped its lead to 24 points on a 23-yard Josh Huson field goal, Denison closed the scoring with a 6-yard pass from Brian Herbe to Peter Jarowey.

"Our defense did what they needed to do and kept Denison from threatening up until that late touchdown," Streeter said. "I'm sure controlling the football the way we did helped."

Four First-Half TDs Lead Football to 31-14 Win Against Denison

From the Gettysburg College Website:

Posted on 09/23/2006

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Freshman quarterback Matt Flynn (Northfield, N.J./Mainland Regional) threw for 163 yards and three touchdowns in his first career start, and junior tailback Tom Sturges (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) gained 186 yards on 31 carries to become Gettysburg's seventh 2,000-yard rusher in a 31-14 win over Denison in non-conference action Saturday at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.

One week after tying a school record with five touchdown passes in relief, Flynn got the start and completed 13 of 23 passes. He also carried the ball six times for 26 yards. Sturges went over 150 yards for the third consecutive game and had his 10th career 100-yard day. By the end of the game, he moved past Paul Martin into sixth on the Gettysburg career rushing list with 2,149 yards. Sturges is now 598 yards away from Shannon Forsythe, who ranks fifth.

The Bullets (2-2) took advantage of an interception and two fumble recoveries while not turning the ball over to take a 28-7 halftime lead. As a team, Gettysburg made seven tackles for 30 yards in losses. Senior defensive end Stevenson Foote (Huntingtown, Md./Calvert) and sophomore defensive end Josh Jerrold (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury East) tied for the team-high with 1.5 tackles for loss each.

Senior halfback Dusty Green (Idaville, Pa./Bermudian Springs) made seven catches for 95 yards and scored two receiving touchdowns for the second week in a row. Denison senior running back Fred Lee gained 135 yards on the ground and scored the game's first touchdown.

Denison (0-3) took the opening kickoff and ran Lee twice for nine yards. On third-and-1, he broke up the middle for a 53-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead. Gettysburg responded with a six-play, 73-yard drive capped by a two-yard run by Sturges. On Sturges' second rush of the game, he ripped off a career-high 53-yard run to go over 2,000 career yards. The Bullets forced a punt in the next Big Red possession and then put together their longest drive of the season, a 16-play, 95-yard effort that covered 5:47 and culminated in a seven-yard touchdown pass from Flynn to Green late in the first quarter.

The two hooked up again on the next Gettysburg drive, and the Bullets added an insurance touchdown with 50 seconds to play before halftime after junior Hunter McMillan (Middletown, Del./Wilmington Friends) recovered a fumbled punt. Three plays later, Flynn hit senior wide receiver Spencer Davidson (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) for a 13-yard touchdown. Davidson has two catches in the last two games, both of which have gone for scores. Gettysburg scored two touchdowns off of Denison fumbles. Sophomore defensive end Conor Quinn (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) sacked Big Red sophomore quarterback Brian Herbe causing a fumble, which Quinn recovered in the first quarter leading to Green's second score.

Gettysburg opened the second half with possession and went three-and-out, but the Bullets stopped Denison on fourth down in each of its next three drives. Bullet opponents are now 1-for-11 (.091) on fourth down this season. The second of those stops came at the end of a seven-play, 71-yard drive by the Big Red. Facing fourth-and-goal from the Gettysburg four, sophomore running back Jon Berg went around the right end, but was chased down by Foote before he could reach the goal line.

Denison managed a score on its first possession of the fourth quarter. The Big Red covered 80 yards in 12 plays, and Herbe hit sophomore wide receiver Peter Jarowey for a six-yard score.

The Bullets finish the 2006 non-conference schedule 2-2 and head into a bye week. The team will be back in action in two weeks, when Gettysburg travels to Westminster, Md., on Oct. 7 to take on McDaniel. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

Denison Football Suffers Loss to Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, Pa.- Gettysburg tailback Tom Sturges carried the ball 31 times for 186 yards and the Bullets scored 31 unanswered points between the first and fourth quarters as Gettysburg College defeated the Denison Big Red 31-14 on Saturday at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.

The Denison offense started out hot as senior Fred Lee (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) took the team's third play from scrimmage 53-yards into the Gettysburg endzone, giving the Big Red a 7-0 lead just 1:57 into the contest.

Gettysburg would go on to score touchdowns on their next three possessions, then added another score with 50 seconds remaining in the second quarter allowing the Bullets to take a 28-7 lead into the locker room.

Gettysburg freshman quarterback Matt Flynn threw three touchdown passes on the day and was 13-of-23 for 163 yards. Dusty Green was his favorite target as the caught seven passes for 95 yards and two TD's.

Denison was led by Lee who had a big day on the ground, carrying the ball 17 times for 135 yards and one touchdown. Jon Berg (Washington, Pa./Trinity) had 15 carries for 45 yards and sophomore quarterback Brian Herbe (Highland Heights, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) was 14-of-25 for 184 yards. He threw one touchdown pass, a fourth quarter strike to sophomore Peter Jarowey (Newton, Mass./South) and had one interception.

Jarowey led all receivers with four receptions for 30 yards. Mike Kushner (Washington, Pa./Trinity) had two catchers for 63 yards, highlighted by a 47-yard catch in the third quarter.
Defensively, senior Torri Zaniol (St. Petersburg, Fla./Seminole) and sophomore Joe Ulrey (Marengo, Ohio/Highland) led Denison with 10 tackles apiece. Sophomore Michael Barnes (Gates Mills, Ohio/Mayfield) had nine tackles and two pass break-up's.

Gettysburg totaled 446 yards of total offense (283 rushing, 163 passing) and the Big Red amassed 349 yards (165 rushing, 184 passing). Denison committed three turnovers on the day while the Bullets did not turn the ball over. DU was penalized eight times for 76 yards and Gettysburg was flagged six times for 50 yards.

Denison drops to 0-3 while Gettysburg evens their record to 2-2. Denison will host Allegheny College next Saturday, Sept. 30 at 1 p.m.

Football Wraps Up Non-Conference Slate at Home Against Denison on Saturday

From the Gettysburg College Website:

Posted on 09/22/2006

Kickoff: Saturday, Sept. 23, 2006 • 1 p.m. • Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium (Gettysburg, Pa.)

The Denison Series: Began in 2004 ... Denison leads 2-0

The Last Meeting: Sept. 24, 2005 - Denison 49, Gettysburg 21 (Granville, Ohio)

Last Gettysburg Win: None

Series Streak: Denison - 2

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The Gettysburg College football team will finish off its 2006 non-conference schedule against Denison on Saturday. Kickoff at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadiuim is set for 1 p.m. Saturday's contest marks the third meeting between Gettysburg and Denison in a new series that only dates back to 2004. The Big Red has won both of the previous games in the series; a 35-23 decision here at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium in 2004 and last year's 49-21 tilt at Deeds Field at Piper Stadium in Granville, Ohio. In last season's game, Larry Cappetto and Fred Lee each scored twice, and Jonathan Berg and Brian Mason added a rushing touchdown each to lead Denison to victory. Gettysburg's Tom Sturges (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) carried the ball 31 times for 151 yards and a touchdown. He cracked the 100-yard plateau for the third time in the season's first four games and would go on to do so three more times in 2005. Dusty Green (Idaville, Pa./Bermudian Springs) caught six passes for 76 yards and a score, while Hunter McMillan (Middletown, Del./Wilmington Friends) completed 15 of 36 passes for 202 yards. Mason and Cappetto each rushed for 56 yards to lead the Big Red, and Cappetto completed 18 of 27 passes for 287 yards and a touchdown pass to Mason. Frank Roe had five catches for 124 yards. Mason opened the scoring on a 31-yard run late in the first quarter, but the extra point was missed. After two penalties and an incompletion, McMillan hit Green for a 29-yard touchdown pass to open the second quarter. Josh Huson (McLean, Va./McLean) tacked on the extra point, giving Gettysburg a 7-6 lead, but the Big Red would score four of the game's next five touchdowns to take the lead for good.

Last Time Out
Freshman quarterback Matt Flynn (Northfield, N.J./Mainland Regional) tied the Gettysburg single-game record for touchdown passes with five, but it was not enough in a 54-42 loss to Rochester in non-conference action at Edwin Fauver Stadium. Yellowjackets' freshman Kapps Killingstad also tied Rochester's school record with four touchdown passes in the game. In a shootout that featured 981 yards of offense, including 534 by the Bullets, and 19 penalties for 159 yards, Flynn completed 18 of 31 passes for 288 yards in the most extensive action of his young career. He connected on scoring strikes with four different players in the game, including senior tailback Dusty Green, who scored twice. His first came on a flare into the left flat that Green hauled in and took 59 yards, tip-toeing up the sideline to get Gettysburg on the board early in the second quarter. Junior wide receiver Matthew Welsh (Lafayette Hill, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) also had a big day, hauling in seven passes for 116 yards and a touchdown. Both the reception and yardage marks were game and career highs. Out of the backfield, junior tailback Tom Sturges carried the ball 27 times for 159 yards and a touchdown. He is now just 37 yards away from becoming Gettysburg's seventh 2,000-yard rusher.

At Deeds Field at Piper Stadium, Denison's Fred Lee scored on the Big Red's first possession of the game, but Case Western Reserve got a safety and two touchdowns in a four-minute span to take a lead it would never give up. Lee scored again with just 17 seconds to play in the first quarter. That would be all the offense for the Big Red in the first night game played at home since 1941. Case Western got another safety in the second quarter and used good clock management to earn the 27-14 victory. Lee carried the ball 11 times for 57 yards and scored twice, proving to be Denison's main source of offense on the night. The Big Red was picked off four times.

Big-Time Opening Act
Freshman Matt Flynn had thrown six passes in the first two games of the season, but in his first extended action as a college quarterback, he broke out in a big way. He came off the bench late in the first quarter last Saturday at Rochester and tied a Gettysburg record with five touchdown passes in the game. He was 18-for-31 with 288 yards and rushed four times for 17 yards for a 305-yard total offensive performance. He connected with four different players for scoring passing covering 59, 15, 30, eight and 14 yards. The first Bullet to throw five touchdown passes in one game was Ross Sachs against Bucknell in 1949. Chris Adams tied the mark in 1994 against Ursinus. As a result of his big day, Flynn became the second straight Gettysburg player named Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Junior tailback Tom Sturges achieved the feat after a good effort against Hampden-Sydney on Sept. 9.

Mr. Consistency
After a solid freshman campaign in 2004, junior tailback Tom Sturges has played in all 13 of Gettysburg's games since the beginning of the 2005 season. In that stretch, he has rushed for over 100 yards eight times, including each of the last two weeks. He was named Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his 26-carry, 174-yard performance against Hampden-Sydney. He followed it with a 27-rush, 159-yard outing at Rochester that included the longest run of his career, a 36-yard jaunt. He also had a 32-yard touchdown run in each game. Against Rochester, he had three catches for 31 yards and returned four kickoffs for 72 yards to put together a career-high 231 all-purpose yards on the day. For the season, Sturges has carried the ball 67 times for 362 yards and two touchdowns, caught four passes for 34 yards and returned six kicks for 135 yards to lead the conference in both rushing and all-purpose yards.

Nearly Two-Grand Man
Junior tailback Tom Sturges' early-season performance has pushed his career rushing total to 1,963 yards, leaving him just 37 yards short of becoming Gettysburg's seventh 2,000-yard rusher. He is also just 90 yards behind Paul Martin for sixth place. He still has a ways to go to reach the top of the list, however. Paul Smith, who played from 1996-99, is still 3,242 yards ahead of Sturges at 5,205.

On the National Stage
Several Gettysburg players have reached the national top 50 in various statistical categories. Junior tailback Tom Sturges leads the charge. He ranks 18th in all-purpose yards with 177.0 per contest and 20th in rushing with 120.7 yards per game. Sturges is just outside the top 50 in another category, ranking 52nd in kickoff return average. He has returned six kicks an average of 22.5 yards. Freshman quarterback Matt Flynn is 42nd with a 140.5 passing efficiency rating, and junior cornerback Adam Fulmer (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) ranks 48th with 1.7 passes defended per game. As a team, Gettysburg is 24th in the nation, averaging 206.3 rushing yards per game and 45th with a +1.0 average turnover margin.

Green Means Go
Senior halfback Dusty Green has had a big opening month of the 2006 season. He is Gettysburg's leading scorer with four touchdowns; two receiving, one rushing and one on a fumble recovery. In the Hampden-Sydney game, he rumbled 85 yards on a rushing play to record the Bullets' first 80-yard run in four years. Last weekend, he caught a 59-yard touchdown pass from Matt Flynn. It was the first 50-yard reception by a Gettysburg player since 2004. Overall, Green has 184 yards rushing on 20 carries and 114 receiving yards on eight catches. He ranks second on the team in all of those categories.

Pass-Catching Combo
Junior wide receiver Matthew Welsh and senior halfback Dusty Green nearly became the first Gettysburg teammates in over 27 years to each have 100 yards receiving in the same game. Welsh set career highs with seven catches for 116 yards and added a touchdown. Green caught five balls for 95 yards and two scores.

Offensive Outburst
After scoring just 12 points at Lebanon Valley in the season opener, the Bullets have exploded for 28 against Hampden-Sydney and 42 against Rochester in the last two weeks. Gettysburg leads the conference in scoring offense (27.3 points per game), rushing offense (206.3 yards per game) and total offense (339.7 yards per game). The Bullets have outrushed the next best ground team in the conference by nearly 50 yards per game.

Making the Stops
Gettysburg has six players among the top 20 tacklers in the Centennial Conference. Senior linebacker Harold Barton (Somerdale, N.J./Sterling) is third with 9.3 stops per game. Sophomore defensive back David Rodriguez (Fort Belvoir, Va./Bishop Ireton) has 9.0 tackles per game, and junior linebacker James Holubowich (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola) (8.3), sophomore defensive end Josh Jerrold (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury East) (8.0), sophomore linebacker Charlie Occhipinti (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) (6.7) and senior defensive end Stevenson Foote (Huntingtown, Md./Calvert) (6.3) are not far behind. Barton is 85th in the nation, while Rodriguez ranks 96th.

Other Defensive Doings
Senior linebacker Harold Barton is tied for sixth with 0.67 sacks per game, and junior cornerback Adam Fulmer is tied for second with 1.67 passes defended per game. Sophomore safety David Rodriguez and senior halfback Dusty Green are tied for the conference lead in forced fumbles and fumble recoveries, respectively.

Line ‘Em Up
Coming into preseason camp, one of Gettysburg's biggest question marks was an offensive line that had to replace four starters from the Centennial Conference's best rushing attack in 2005. After an uneven performance at Lebanon Valley on Sept. 2, the Bullets' front five has started to come together. The quintet of seniors Rick Finnegan (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) (C) and Dain Alaia (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem) (RG), junior James Russell (Amityville, N.Y./Amityville Memorial) (LT) and sophomores Jay Hagerman (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) (LG) and Sam Walthall (Uniondale, N.Y./Woodlands) (RT) paved the way for Gettysburg's best rushing effort in several years against Hampden-Sydney. Two players gained over 100 yards rushing for the first time since 2002, and Gettysburg rushed for 318 yards as a team, eclipsing the 300-yard mark for the first time in three years. Additionally, quarterbacks Mark Campo (Arendtsville, Pa./Biglerville) and Matt Flynn were not sacked during the game, making Hampden-Sydney the first sackless Gettysburg opponent since 2004. Last Saturday at Rochester, the offensive line's success continued, as the Bullets gained 534 total yards, including 216 on the ground. They only allowed one sack on the day and helped Flynn tie the Gettysburg single-game record with five touchdown passes.

Head of the Class
Gettysburg head coach Barry Streeter is the longest-tenured and winningest football coach in Gettysburg history. He surpassed Hen Bream (1927-51), who coached for 22 seasons, in 2000. Streeter won his 105th career game against Muhlenberg in 1995 to take over the career wins lead. Now in his 28th season as head coach, he has a 137-134-5 (.505) career record.

Scouting Denison (0-2, 0-0 NCAC)
The Big Red returns 14 starters, seven on each side of the ball, from a team that was 5-5 a year ago and finished 3-4 to tie for fifth in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Among the returnees on offense is senior running back Fred Lee, who carried the ball 183 times for 818 yards (4.5 yards per carry) in 2005. He scored seven rushing touchdowns. Sophomore running back Brian Mason also returns after a big rookie campaign during which he carried 40 times for 172 yards and finished second on the team with five rushing touchdowns. On defense, senior cornerback Andrew Terlecky returns with his team-high five interceptions from a year ago. He also registered 40 tackles. Denison has yet to come away with a win in 2006, but it has played a pair of closely contested games. A 46-yard pass by Randolph-Macon with five seconds to play in regulation broke a 14-14 tie to hand the Big Red a loss in the season opener. Two weeks ago, Case Western Reserve scored a safety and two touchdowns after Denison got an early touchdown to take a lead it would not relinquish. The Big Red is coming off a bye week today. Lee has carried the ball 19 times for 77 yards and two touchdowns, and sophomore quarterback Brian Herbe is 27-for-46 for 202 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Denison has struggled with turnovers, throwing six interceptions and losing a fumble, but the defense has held opponents to just 94.0 rushing yards per game.

Coaches' Corner
Streeter on the Play of Matt Flynn
"You realize (during the game) how well he was playing, but you have no idea about any records or anything like that. It's really encouraging. He's such a young player. The key to being a good player is consistency, and that is what we are looking for from him."

Streeter on Dusty Green's Versatility
"Dusty has very good speed and catches the ball very well. We ask our wing backs to do a lot of things. They have to be good blockers, runners, route runners and pass catchers. On the long touchdown at Rochester, he looked like he was going to go out of bounds and then he just tip-toed up the sideline and outran everybody."

Gettysburg to stress ball control

From today's Patriot-News:

Gettysburg to stress ball control

Friday, September 22, 2006

BY BOB BLACK Of The Patriot-News

After allowing 21 fourth-quarter points in a 54-42 loss at Rochester last week, Gettysburg coach Barry Streeter realizes his defense might need to tighten its belt just a little when Denison comes to Musselman Stadium for a 1 p.m. game tomorrow.

That's especially true since Denison came close to matching that number in a 49-21 home win last season.

One positive note from last week's loss was freshman quarterback Matt Flynn, who replaced senior Mark Campo (Biglerville) at quarterback in the first quarter. Flynn threw a single-game school record five touchdown passes on his way to being named the Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week.

"He's a good athlete with a lot of skills," Streeter said of Flynn's performance at Rochester. "We showed that we can score in last week's game at Rochester. But we have to keep Denison from scoring like they did last year against us. That's our challenge for this week."

In addition to Flynn's five touchdowns and 288 yards passing, Gettysburg got a touchdown and a 159-yard rushing performance from junior tailback Tom Sturges. Dusty Green (Bermudian Springs) hauled in a pair of TD passes among the five he caught for 95 yards.

"I thought Matt showed a tremendous amount of poise and maturity for a freshman out there," said Green. "We knew in camp that he was going to be a good quarterback. He was a quick study and really stepped up against Rochester."

After backing up Campo in Gettysburg's three previous games (a 13-12 loss to Lebanon Valley, a 28-20 home win over Hampden-Sydney, and the loss at Rochester), Flynn will start tomorrow against Denison.

"We have four quarterbacks who are capable of handling our offense quite well," said Streeter. "If we need to, we won't hesitate to switch off to get our offense moving."

Gettysburg's other quarterbacks are junior Hunter McMillan, who started last season, and sophomore Mike Lynch.

"It's important for our offense to control the football to keep Denison off the field," said Streeter. "They've lost their first two games, so we know they'll be coming after us to win this one."

In those two losses (20-14 at Randolph-Macon and 27-14 at home to Case Western Reserve last weekend), the Big Red scored just four touchdowns. Last year, Denison scored seven touchdowns against Gettysburg.

Fred Lee, a 231-pound senior running back who scored two of those touchdowns, is Denison's leading rusher, with two touchdowns and 77 yards on 19 attempts. Sturges leads the Bullets with 362 yards on the ground and a pair of touchdowns in 67 attempts.

"We're capable of controlling the football," said Streeter. "And that's something we'll need to do against Denison."

GCFPC WEEKLY UPDATE – Gettysburg v. Denison

GCFPC WEEKLY UPDATE – Gettysburg v. Denison

The Bullets return home this Saturday to meet the Big Red of Denison University. On what is supposed to be a beautiful day, Gettysburg looks to avenge a loss in Granville last year and build momentum going into the bye week and the start of Centennial Conference play.

TAILGATING: The home game pre- and post-game Tailgates will resume on Saturday at the Pavilion next to Quarry Lake (at the stadium end of Lincoln Avenue, turn right to the gravel parking lot near the covered pavilion). We will start gathering at about 10:45 a.m. and close things down for the games by 12:45 p.m. (game time is 1:00). The Parents Club will furnish some hot and cold finger food before the game (arriving at 11:15 a.m.), but each family should plan to provide their own basic food and drinks for the day. And a piece of good news: the port toilet should be back at the Pavillion this week(!).

Tailgating will also take place after the home games at the Pavilion from approximately 4:00 p.m. into the evening. The players are invited after the games, and the Parents Club will provide some additional food for all and drinks for the players. Other than drinks for players after the game, beverages of choice are BYO. While alcohol may be consumed by adults at the Pavilion, you must be aware that GC Safety and Security, as well as Gettysburg Borough Police, WILL enforce alcohol laws anywhere else on campus. It would be very unfortunate for someone to be cited for an “open container” violation while walking to the Stadium or elsewhere on campus. This is a serious issue that all should heed.

This week, Sophomore parents are asked to bring food/drinks to share, although other contributions certainly would be appreciated. Please place your “community” food items on the tables along the side of the pavilion. Your contribution can be for before or after the game.

There are no set “rules” for what to bring as a potluck contribution, although some class representatives may try to bring some more organization as to who brings what. However, generally the potlucks are ad hoc, with families bringing enough of an item to feed about 10 – 15 people, depending on the nature of the item(s). In the past, families have brought three- or five-foot subs, crock pot food, fresh pretzels from Philadelphia, pizza, desserts, sausage or meatball sandwiches, etc., etc. Feel free to use you imagination. Potluck food can be served at the pre and/or post game Tailgates. The food is placed at several long tables in the Pavilion and is available to all once it is on the tables. N.B.: The drinks provided by the Parents Club in coolers after the games are for the players and cheerleaders only.

This is a potluck, not a catered event, so it is best not to rely solely on the food, place settings, etc. provided by the Club and the potluck contributors to totally feed your family. These items are meant to supplement what you might want to bring for your own personal Tailgate wants.

If you are unable to make it to your “assigned” game, please contribute at any other game you attend. Also, many families routinely contribute voluntarily to the potluck at several or all games – we certainly appreciate that extra effort!

The rest of the season’s Tailgate food contribution schedule is as follows:

October 14th Freshman Parents – families with last names starting in “A” though “L”

October 21st (Family Weekend) -- Food furnished by the College at the rear of the stadium before the game. Tailgate food is all BYO

November 11th Freshmen Parents – families with last names starting in “M” though “Z”

MEMBERSHIP: The response to Membership has been terrific. If you haven’t yet sent in your form and dues for membership in the Gettysburg College Football Parents Club, please do so now!

BULLETS MERCHANDISE: Orders placed by this past Tuesday should be available for pick up this Saturday (at the Bullets Merchandise Order Table). There will be a Bullets football merchandise table at the Tailgate this week and at all home games. A very limited quantity of merchandise will be available for purchase, but pre-orders are the norm. You can place a pre-order at this week’s game or request a merchandise list / order form by email. Orders this week will be filled for the next home game.

Volunteers Needed: We are looking for parents willing to work a half-hour or so “shift” at the Merchandise Table during the tailgates (pre- or posr-game). We would like to have enough people volunteer that we can assign each person just two or so half-hour shifts over the next four home games. Please respond to this email or to GCFPC2006@Gmail.com if you can help us. Thanks.

ACTION PHOTOS: Bill Dowling, a professional photographer, has agreed again this year to take action photos of players and cheerleaders at each home game. Each week, Bill’s photos will appear on his website (www.dowlingphoto.com) and can be ordered for very reasonable prices (5x7 @ $11; 8x10 @ $16; 11x14 @ $27). Bill’s website is easy to navigate (start with “Bullets Football” on the right margin of his home page). We expect that every player and cheerleader will appear on the website during the season for that special picture.

ALUMNI FAMILIES - Please feel comfortable to join us at any Bullets game. Let us know if you want to sign up as an alumni member of the GCFPC (dues are only $20).

JV Wins Again!

I received a comment on the blog stating that the Bullets JV beat Frostburg State 42-35 ! Congratulations to the JV team!

The person commenting stated a photographer was there, but they can't find any pictures. As of right now, there are no pictures posted on Bill Dowling's website, but if he did take pictures, they will show up here.

Denison Week!

Throughout this week I will post information and articles leading up to this week's home game with Denison.

The following information is taken from D3Football.com's Kickoff 2006 Season Preview:

Denison Big Red

Last time not in playoffs: 2005

Last year: 5-5, 3-4 NCAC

Last conference title: 1986

Wins increase/decrease: Minus-1

Preseason ranking: 137 of 234

Head coach: Nick Fletcher, seventh season, 20-40, 47-62 overall

Starters returning: 14 (seven offense, seven defense, zero special teams)

Position battle to watch: Tight end. All-region pick Frank Roe has graduated, leaving a big vacancy in Denison’s pro-style offense.

Pressure is on: Running back Fred Lee. With a new starting quarterback taking over, Lee will be the focal point of opposing defenses this season.

Where did he come from? Cornerback Andrew Terlecky. In his first year as a starter, Terlecky picked off a team-leading five passes.

Their season will be defined by: How they play on the road. In 2005, Denison went 5-0 at home, 0-5 on the road.

Predicted record: 4-6, 3-4

Capsule: After struggling during the early portion of this decade, Denison has surged into the NCAC mix over the last two years. Narrow road losses at Ohio Wesleyan and Kenyon kept Denison from a second straight winning season. Denison returns seven starters on each side of the ball, including three members of a ball-hawking secondary that recorded 22 interceptions last year. Cornerback Andrew Terlecky picked off five passes and is joined by starting safeties Derek Fry and Jason Wright. Linebackers Ike Akusoba, Craig Dix and Jim Minor are all back, also. Denison forced 30 turnovers last year but also allowed 383 yards and 26 points per game. Proliflic quarterback Larry Cappetto graduated, as did his top two targets, tight end Frank Roe and wide receiver Matt Petersen. The returning quarterbacks on the roster combined to throw one pass last year. Senior Dan Kreer, sophomore Jordan Linck and sophomore Brian Herbe will compete in a three-way derby. With some question marks in the passing game, at least for now, hard-charging running back Fred Lee will have an even greater role in the Big Red offense. Lee ran for 818 yards and seven touchdowns in 2005. Lee will benefit from the return of four starting offensive linemen, including senior tackle Pat Downs, an All-NCAC pick last year. The Big Red will benefit from a conference schedule that does not include either Wooster or Wittenberg. Denison also gets to host Allegheny, Ohio Wesleyan, Kenyon and Wabash. If the Big Red defense can continue to force turnovers and Lee doesn’t have to run against nine-man fronts, Denison’s climb toward the NCAC’s upper echelon will very likely continue.

LANCASTER, Pa. - Freshman quarterback Matt Flynn (Northfield, N.J./Mainland Regional) has been named Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week in an announcement made by the conference on Sunday. Flynn came off the bench late in the first quarter and tied a Gettysburg single-game record for touchdown passes with five. In the most extensive action of his young career, Flynn completed of 18 of 31 passes for 288 yards and carried the ball four times for 17 more yards in a 54-42 loss at Rochester.

Junior linebacker James Holubowich (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola) was also named to the CC weekly honor roll after recording 10 tackles. One of the tackles resulted in a four-yard loss. Holubowich tied teammate Harold Barton (Somerdale, N.J./Sterling) for the tackles lead among all players in the game.

The conference's outstanding offensive performer in each of the last two weeks has come from Gettysburg. Junior tailback Tom Sturges (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) earned the honor last week for the fifth time in his career after rushing 26 times for 174 yards and a touchdown that put Gettysburg ahead for good in a 28-20 win over Hampden-Sydney. On Saturday at Rochester, Sturges again had a big day, carrying the ball 27 times for 159 yards and a touchdown. He also returned four kickoffs for 72 yards, giving him a career-high 231 all-purpose yards. He leads the conference in both rushing and all-purpose yards.

Flynn completed touchdown passes of 59, 15, 30, eight and 14 yards to four different receivers on Saturday. He connected with senior halfback Dusty Green (Idaville, Pa./Bermudian Springs) five times for 95 yards and two scores, including a 59-yarder that was Gettysburg's longest pass play since 2003. Flynn also completed seven passes to junior wide receiver Matthew Welsh (Lafayette Hill, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) for 116 yards. On the season, Flynn has played in all three games, going 24-of-47 (51.1 percent) for 328 yards and five touchdowns and a 140.54 quarterback efficiency rating. He has also run the ball seven times for 10 yards and another touchdown.

The Bullets will wrap up their non-conference slate at home this Saturday against Denison. Kickoff at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium is set for 1 p.m.

Flynn Ties Gettysburg Record With Five TD Passes in 54-42 Loss at Rochester

From the Gettysburg College Website:

Posted on 09/16/2006

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Freshman quarterback Matt Flynn (Northfield, N.J./Mainland Regional) tied the Gettysburg single-game record for touchdown passes with five, but it was not enough in a 54-42 loss to Rochester in non-conference action at Edwin Fauver Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Yellowjackets' freshman Kapps Killingstad also tied Rochester's school record with four touchdown passes in the game.

In a shootout that featured 981 yards of offense, including 534 by the Bullets (1-2), and 19 penalties for 159 yards, Flynn completed 18 of 31 passes for 288 yards in the most extensive action of his young career. He connected on scoring strikes with four different players in the game, including senior tailback Dusty Green (Idaville, Pa./Bermudian Springs), who scored twice.

Out of the backfield, junior tailback Tom Sturges (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) carried the ball 27 times for 159 yards and a touchdown. He is now just 37 yards away from becoming Gettysburg's seventh 2,000-yard rusher.

For the Yellowjackets (2-1), who were playing in their 1,000th game all-time, Killingstad went 10-for-16 for 178 yards and four touchdowns. His favorite target was junior wide receiver J.J. Vanderstyne, who caught four passes for 103 yards and a pair of scores. Classmate Matt Bielecki averaged 8.0 yards on 27 carries to rush for 215 yards and two touchdowns for the home team.

Defensively for Gettysburg, linebackers James Holubowich (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola) and Harold Barton (Somerdale, N.J./Sterling) each had 10 tackles to lead all players. Barton recorded the Bullets' lone sack, and Holubowich had one tackle for a four-yard loss. Rochester junior defensive back Jim Milks returned a Flynn pass 52-yards for a touchdown early in the second quarter.

Rochester's quick start to the game would be an indicator of how the rest of the game would go. The teams combined for 10 touchdown passes and eight scoring plays of 30+ yards. Sophomore Mike Sondericker returned the opening kickoff to midfield, and on the first play from scrimmage, Killingstad found Vanderstyne streaking down the right sideline for a 50-yard touchdown. That would be all the scoring for the first quarter, but the action picked up in the second.

Flynn entered the game on Gettysburg's last series of the first quarter and led the team to two first downs. On first-and-10 from his own 35, Flynn was hit by senior outside linebacker Jason Goeller as he threw, leading to an incomplete pass. After a one-yard gain by Sturges, Flynn was hit on the release again, and this time was picked off by Milks, who raced 52 yards for the score.

The Bullets responded with Green's 59-yard yard touchdown on the next drive, but Rochester handed the ball to Bielecki twice on the next series. The second time he broke a 56-yard scoring run. On the first attempt for extra point, Barton jumped offsides and blocked the kick. On the second attempt, the ball connected solidly with the left upright, leaving the Yellowjackets with a 20-7 lead.

The teams traded three-and-outs before the Bullets took over for one of their most diverse drives of the year. They started off with junior halfback Shawn Hollingsworth (Chester, Pa./Wilmington Friends) in the right slot. Flynn rolled that way on the option and flipped the ball to Hollingsworth, who was coming back around the left end for a 27-yard gain. Seven plays later, Flynn connected with Green again, this time on a perfectly thrown 15-yard fade to the left corner of the end zone.

Rochester missed a 44-yard field goal on its next possession, and Gettysburg took over again. Sturges ripped off a career-long 36-yard rush on second down. After Welsh picked up the first down, Flynn completed a 30-yard pass to junior tight end Pete Meggers (Manchester, Conn./Loomis Chaffee) for a touchdown. It was the first catch of Meggers' career, and it gave the visitors a 21-20 lead at the break.

Sturges, who had four kickoff returns for 72 yards, put together a career-best 231 all-purpose yards on the day. He returned the opening kickoff of the second half nine yards to set up a seven-play, 81-yard drive that he capped with a 32-yard touchdown, putting Gettysburg up by a 28-20 count.

Rochester answered with a 13-play, 71-yard drive that ate 6:19 off the clock and then forced the Bullets to punt on their next two possessions. After the second punt, Killingstad hit Vanderstyne with a 45-yard touchdown pass despite a flag for pass interference on Gettysburg. The Yellowjackets would score touchdowns on each of their next three possessions, and despite touchdown passes to Welsh and senior Spencer Davidson (Dumont, N.J./Dumont), the Bullets were unable to regain the lead.

Gettysburg wraps up its non-conference schedule next Saturday with a home game against Denison. Kickoff at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium is set for 1 p.m.

Box Scores

Gettysburg totaled 534 in offense - 218 on the ground (Tom Sturges had 159 on 27 carries) and 316 in the air.

Killingstad threw a 50-yard TD pass to Vanderstyne on Rochester's first play from scrimmage. Milks returned an interception of a Mark Campo pass 52 yards for a TD early in the second quarter for a 14-0 lead.

The Bullets rallied. Green caught a 59-yard pass from Flynn. After Bielecki's 56-yard breakaway gave Rochester a 20-7 lead, Flynn found Green (15 yards, 5:08 left) and Meggers (30 yards, 1:18 left) to put the Bullets up, 21-20 at halftime.

Sturges capped a 7-play, 81-yard drive with a 32-yard run to start the third quarter. Rochester answered with a 13-play, 71-yard drive and the one-yard scoring pass to McCarthy. Rochester's try for two failed (28-26).

The Yellowjackets scored on four straight drives - a 45-yard TD passes to Vanderstyne and Sondericker, Bielecki's five-yard run, and the 28-yard Molisani-to-Freeman connection.

It is Rochester's highest point total since October 30, 1982 in a 54-10 victory over Brockport.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Saturday's non-conference game at Rochester marks the fourth meeting between the Yellowjackets and Bullets in a series that dates to 1912. Rochester owns a 3-0 all-time record, having won the first game 7-0 on Nov. 28, 1912. After a 92-year hiatus, the series resumed in 2004. The Yellowjackets prevailed 31-6 at Fauver Stadium in 2004 and came to Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium last season and earned a 41-20 win. Rochester quarterback Aaron Molisani was 9-of-22 for 149 yards and two touchdowns. He ran for 110 yards and two more scores to guide his team to victory. Gettysburg quarterback Hunter McMillan (Middletown, Del./Wilmington Friends) threw for 68 yards on 9-of-16 passing, and Mark Campo (Arendtsville, Pa./Biglerville) was 6-of-8 for 53 yards and a passing touchdown. Molisani got things started after a scoreless first quarter, carrying the ball one yard for a touchdown on the first play of the second quarter. The Bullets' All-America kick returner, Nathan Smith, took the ensuing kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown, cutting the deficit to one at 7-6. After a failed two-point attempt for Gettysburg, Rochester responded with 35 straight points. Jerry Jones (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Lenape) caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Campo with 3:59 to play, and Justin Gayles capped the scoring with a 53-yard blocked punt return for a touchdown.

Last Time Out
Junior tailback Tom Sturges (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) and senior halfback Dusty Green (Idaville, Pa./Bermudian Springs) each rushed for more than 100 yards, and the Gettysburg defense picked off Hampden-Sydney three times to earn a 28-20 victory in non-conference action on Saturday at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium. The win is the Bullets' first over the Tigers since 1997 and snaps an eight-game losing streak in the series. Sturges carried the ball 26 times for 174 yards, and Green had 11 rushes for 126 yards. Both scored a touchdown. Among Green's carries was an 85-yard touchdown run in the second quarter that was the Bullets' first 80+-yard carry in over four years. Tigers' freshman quarterback Craig Warnement completed 20-of-44 passes for 261 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. Simpson and junior receiver Drew Smith each caught eight passes for 117 yards and a touchdown. Senior linebacker Harold Barton (Somerdale, N.J./Sterling), senior defensive lineman Rob Brassell (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./La Salle College) and freshman defensive back Ian Evans (Hopatcong, N.J./Hopatcong) each recorded an interception in the game.

At Edwin Fauver Stadium in Rochester, N.Y., Rochester took a 7-6 lead into halftime, but St. John Fisher rallied for three second-half touchdowns and a field goal to earn a 30-10 win. St. John Fisher running back Mark Robinson carried the ball 21 times for 125 yards and a touchdown. James Reile also carried 21 times, tallying 67 yards and the go-ahead touchdown early in the third quarter. Two Chris Pierri field goals put the visitors up 6-0, but the Yellowjackets countered with a 43-yard scoring strike from freshman quarterback Kapps Killingstad to junior receiver Jay Jay Vanderstyne with 2:17 to go before halftime. Killingstad was 5-of-11 for 68 yards in relief, and Vanderstyne led the team with 57 receiving yards on three catches.

Centennial Runner
Junior tailback Tom Sturges ripped off 172 yards on 26 carries last Saturday against Hampden-Sydney for his eighth careeer 100+-yard outing. He broke a 32-yard touchdown run up the right sideline midway through the third quarter that put the Bullets ahead for good. He also ran the ball six times on Gettysburg's final possession, picking up a pair of first downs and helping the team to kill the final 4:13 on the clock. For his efforts, he was named Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the fifth time in his career. Additionally, he was honored by the ECAC as the conference's Division III Southwest Offensive Player of the Week. He ranks fourth in the conference and 57th in the nation with 101.5 yards per game on the ground.

Green Means Go
Senior halfback Dusty Green recorded his second career 100-yard day against Hampden-Sydney and his first since Sept. 4, 2004. He carried the ball 11 times for 126 yards with the biggest chunk coming on an 85-yard scamper in the second quarter. That run was the Bullets' first rush of 80 or more yards since Nick Nocar torched Lebanon Valley for 80 on Sept. 7, 2002. Green ranks fifth in the Centennial Conference and 75th in the nation with 87.0 yards per game.

Hundred-Yard Holiday
Junior tailback Tom Sturges ran for 174 yards on 26 carries against Hampden-Sydney. Senior halfback Dusty Green joined him in passing the 100-yard plateau, carrying the ball 11 times for 126 yards. The duo is the first set of Gettysburg teammates to each go over 100 yards rushing in the same game since Mike Schwalb ran 18 times for 139 yards and Joe Gossweiler added 117 yards on 18 carries against St. Lawrence on Nov. 2, 2002.

Long Time Coming
The Gettysburg-Hampden-Sydney series began in 1982 with a 35-8 Bullets' victory. Gettysburg won three of the first four meetings and four of the first seven until the series was discontinued after the 1988 season. It was resumed in 1995 with the teams trading road victories at Hampden-Sydney 1995 and at Gettysburg in 1996. Gettysburg then won 33-7 at Hampden-Sydney on Sept. 13, 1997, but the Tigers ripped off eight consecutive victories over the Bullets between 1998-2005. With a 28-20 win last Saturday, Gettysburg put a stop to that streak and cut Hampden-Sydney's series lead to 12-7.

Line 'Em Up
Coming into preseason camp, one of Gettysburg's biggest question marks was an offensive line that had to replace four starters from the Centennial Conference's best rushing attack in 2005. After an uneven performance at Lebanon Valley on Sept. 2, the Bullets' front five has started to come together. The quintet of seniors Rick Finnegan (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) (C) and Dain Alaia (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem) (RG), junior James Russell (Amityville, N.Y./Amityville Memorial) (LT) and sophomores Jay Hagerman (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) (LG) and Sam Walthall (Uniondale, N.Y./Woodlands) (RT) paved the way for Gettysburg's best rushing effort in several years. Two players gained over 100 yards rushing for the first time since 2002, and Gettysburg rushed for 318 yards as a team, eclipsing the 300-yard mark for the first time in three years. Additionally, quarterbacks Mark Campo and Matt Flynn (Northfield, N.J./Mainland Regional) were not sacked during the game, making Hampden-Sydney the first sackless Gettysburg opponent since 2004.

Don't Come Around Here No More
Junior cornerback Adam Fulmer (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) is ranked 20th in the nation with 2.5 passes defended per game. He had three breakups and an interception at Lebanon Valley on Sept. 2 and added a pass breakup last weekend.

Pick Pockets
Adam Fulmer's interception against Lebanon Valley was just a preview of what was to come against Hampden-Sydney. The Bullets picked off Tigers' freshman quarterback Craig Warnement three times last weekend. Senior linebacker Harold Barton set up Gettysburg's first score with an interception at the Hampden-Sydney 20 that he returned 19 yards to the one. Freshman quarterback Matt Flynn plunged across the goal line three plays later to tie the game at 7-7. On the first play of the fourth quarter, senior defensive tackle Rob Brassell batted a screen pass up into the air and made a nice one-handed catch to set up senior quarterback Mark Campo's insurance touchdown, which proved to be huge after Hampden-Sydney scored late in the game to cut the lead to 28-20. Freshman defensive back Ian Evans also picked off a pass and nearly got another one.

Making the List
Senior linebacker Harold Barton and senior punter Ryan Dunn (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) were each named to the Centennial Conference Weekly Honor Roll for their parts in Gettysburg's 28-20 win over Hampden-Sydney. Barton made five tackles (three solo) and returned an interception 19 yards to the Tigers' one yard line, setting up the Bullets' first score. Dunn punted the ball nine times for 283 yards (31.4). Three of his kicks were downed inside the 20, including those that began Hampden-Sydney's last two drives of the game.

Now in his 28th season as head coach, he has a 137-133-5 (.507) career record.

Scouting Rochester (1-1, 0-0 LL)
The Yellowjackets traveled to Baltimore, Md., to face Johns Hopkins in the season opener on Sept. 2 and came away with a 20-10 win. Junior receiver Jay Jay Vanderstyne and senior running back Pat O'Brien each caught touchdown passes from senior quarterback Aaron Molisani, and sophomore defensive back Matt Stack returned an interception 80 yards for a score. In last week's 30-10 home loss to St. John Fisher, Molisani was picked off three times by the middle of the second quarter and was relieved by freshman Kapps Killingstad. In Killingstad's first offensive series, he connected with Vanderstyne for a 43-yard touchdown. On the season, Molisani and Killingstad have combined to complete 30-of-52 passes (57.7 percent) for 325 yards and all three of the Yellowjackets' offensive touchdowns. Junior running back Matt Bielecki leads the team with 170 yards on 49 carries, and Vanderstyne has seven catches for 139 yards and two touchdowns. On defense, junior defensive back Jim Milks leads the team with 19 tackles (12 solo), and senior outside linebacker Jason Goeller is tops with four tackles for 21 yards in losses, including three sacks. With 1.5 sacks per game, he ranks 25th in the nation in that category.

Coach's Corner
Streeter on the Play of the Offensive Line
"They played a much better game (against Hampden-Syndey) than the week before. It was a very encouraging game. I thought they developed well in the preseason, but we were alternating at certain spots to make sure we had the right guys in there. For a unit like that, it takes time to come together, and they will continue to get better."

Streeter on The Overnight Trip to Rochester
"Our big focus is to play well. The goal is to beat a good football team on the road. If you are going to be a good college football team, you have to do that. The environment is different, but that is a challenge for our guys. They have to get in the mindset to play, and once we are on the field, it shouldn't be any different."

Streeter on Rochester
"They have a new head coach and a new offensive coordinator. They also have an excellent running back, and they throw the ball well on the run. Rochester plays good defense, and they are big and strong. They are very multiple. You have to prepare for that multiplicity. We will have to play well defensively and keep taking the ball away. We must continue to run the ball effectively and be more effective in the passing game. Rochester is definitely the best team we have played so far."

Wins increase/decrease: No change

Preseason ranking: 116 of 234

Head coach: Scott Greene, 1st season, 0-0

Starters returning: 14 total (7 offense, 6 defense, 1 special team)

Position battle to watch: Receiver. Five of the six top receivers from a year ago, including David Ferris, who scored 10 receiving touchdowns last year, graduated, leaving only Matt Bielecki. The position will be wide open to find quality players for quarterback Aaron Molisani to throw to. Greene said freshmen Zach Ingoldsby has been a pleasant surprise in camp, along with Pedro Sosa at tight end, and Mike Coolbaugh. These players will be getting playing time in 2006. A position battle at the cornerback spot between junior Andy Rape and sophomore Sean Simpson also will be a fierce one, Greene said.

Pressure is on: The entire coaching staff. Greene, a linebacker coach last year, was promoted to head coach in May, and Mike Foster, the offensive coordinator was named to the position in June. He did, however, lead St. John Fisher as the offensive coordinator from 2002 to 2005. Defensive coordinator Nick Grange will also be a rookie as a coordinator but has coached the Yellowjackets' outside linebackers for the past two seasons. Depending on how fast everything can come together between the coaches and new players will play a role in how the team does this season. "We've all become pretty close as a staff," Greene said. "We all want to win."

Where did he come from? Senior Running back Patrick O'Brien has 664 yards and four touchdowns as a sophomore in 2004, but got injured in 2005, running for 191 yards and 3 touchdowns before the injury. O'Brien looks to come back strong in 2006.

Their season will be defined by: The Courage Bowl on Sept. 9 versus St. John Fisher will be a defining early season test for the Yellowjackets. Also, four games from Sept. 30 to Oct. 28 against St. Lawrence, Kings Point, WPI, and Grove City will make the difference between a 5-5 or 6-4 campaign and one a lot more disappointing.

Predicted record: 3-3, 5-5

Capsule: Junior Matt Bielecki rushed for 1,124 yards and seven touchdowns in 2005, only the fourth time in 117 years of football at Rochester that a Yellowjacket has rushed for a thousand yards in a season. Senior quarterback Aaron Molisani had almost 2,000 all-purpose yards in 2005, throwing for 1,451 yards and 14 TD's and rushing for 482 yards and 5 TDs. The Yellowjackets are right on the edge of being in the top echelon of the Liberty League, and a couple of breaks here and there could vault them into that in 2006. It will all depend on how the team gels with a young coaching staff and a young receiving corps.

GCFPC WEEKLY UPDATE – Gettysburg v. University of Rochester

GCFPC WEEKLY UPDATE – Gettysburg v. University of Rochester

The Bullets travel this week to Rochester, New York to meet the Yellowjackets of U.R. in pursuit of their second win of the season. After a long-sought win over Hampden-Sydney, the Bullets look to avenge losses the last two years to Rochester.

Congraulations to Tom Sturges who has been recognized as the Offensive Player of the Week by The Centennial Conference!

Congratulations also to this week's Conference Honor Roll members - Harold Barton and Ryan Dunn for their respective performances on Defense and Special Teams.

TAILGATING / Hampden-Sydney: Thank you to all who attended, and, especially those who contributed to, this past Saturday’s pre- and post-game Tailgate at the Quarry Pavilion. We clearly continued the momentum of recent years in having a great turnout and enjoying a nice time with fellow football families and our player-sons / cheerleader-daughters (and their friends). Thanks go out especially to the Finnegans for coordinating the Tailgate. We are still looking for one or two families to join the Tailgate Committee – especially to help at the Pavilion with set up or clean up. There is a lot of clean-up even as the Tailgate is on, so you do not need to stay until the end to help with this important job (keeping the Pavilion in good shape when we leave is critical to our continuing to use its great facilities). By the way, portable bathroom facilities will be available at the Pavilion for the rest of the games.
This is a good time to ask for input from everyone, and especially first year families, for new ideas and suggestions on making the Tailgates even better – fresh views are welcome. Also, if you have any questions about Tailgates or other Club activities, please send them along and we will respond. For example, it was asked last week if parents can bring other family members and friends to the Tailgates: Club members can bring guests to the Tailgates – we just ask that you contribute something additional to the group when you do so.

ROCHESTER GAME TIME, etc.: Game time is at 12:00 noon . Tickets are $3, although in the past, parents are allowed free entrance (make sure your son puts you on a list if one is required for this). Goergen Field has been reserved for Gettysburg tailgate. The field is across the street from the stadium with easy drop off capabilities, cars will need to park away from the area. One 6’ table and a trash barrel have been allocated for our use. A campus map and directions are at http://www.rochester.edu/maps/ Directions from the Crowne Plaza to U.R. will be available at the hotel’s front desk.

ROCHESTER GAME – HOTEL: For anyone making last minute plans to go to the game, the Rochester Crown Plaza will still be willing to honor the Gettysburg College Football Parents Club block rate if rooms are still available. You can book rooms by calling the Reservations Manager’s direct line (Patty Vahue at 585-324-0038; pvahue@rcpny.com) and asking for a room under the Gettysburg College Parents Block. You can get either a two-queen or one-king bed room at the flat rate of $72 per room plus tax (up to 4 people). (Onsite parking is $3.50/day). The hotel’s website (with directions and much other information) is http://www.rcpny.com/.
Please let us know by return email if are planning to attend the game (and let us know where you will be staying overnight). Perhaps those who are interested can get together in the Crowne Plaza’s “State Street Grill” at 9:00 p.m. or so on Friday evening.

MEMBERSHIP: If you haven’t yet sent in your form and dues for membership in the Gettysburg College Football Parents Club, please do so now! A membership form is attached.

BULLETS MERCHANDISE: Orders placed by this weekend should be available for pick up at the Denison home game next Saturday. Pre-orders assure availability of merchandise and make it much easier for us. The merchandise list is attached. You can order by sending your request directly to GCFPC2006@gmail.com (if you do this, please also mail an order form and check).

ACTION PHOTOS: Bill Dowling Photography has taken great action photos from the Bullets victory over Hampden-Sydney on Saturday. They are now online and available for ordering. Due to webspace considerations, the photos for this game will be available for ordering for only the next two weeks. The photos can be found at http://www.dowlingphoto.com/ (click Bullets link in right margin). Please take a look at the photos and patronize Bill’s efforts, while getting a unique “moment in time” from your son’s / daughter’s college experience. If you have any special requests for Bill, we can pass them along. By the way, part of each purchase goes directly to the Parents Club.

ALUMNI FAMILIES - Please feel comfortable to join us at any Bullets game. Let us know if you want to sign up as an alumni member of the GCFPC (dues are only $20).

GCFPC EMAIL POLICY - This email list is solely for Gettysburg College Football Parents Club matters. By allowing your email address on this list, you agree not to disclose any address on this list or to use the list for any purpose other than Parent’s Club activities. Contact the sender of this email if you wish to be removed (or to add a secondary email address to this list).

For those attending the Rochester game, let’s be vocal in our support as we will certainly be outnumbered by the home fans.

LANCASTER, Pa. - Junior tailback Tom Sturges (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) has been named Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week in an announcement made by the conference on Sunday. Sturges ran for 174 yards on 26 carries and scored a 32-yard touchdown that gave Gettysburg the lead for good in a 28-20 win over Hampden-Sydney on Saturday at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium. Sturges is the conference's offensive player of the week for the fifth time in his career, having earned the honor four times in 2005.

Senior linebacker Harold Barton (Somerdale, N.J./Sterling) and senior punter Ryan Dunn (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) were also named to the CC weekly honor roll for their role in Gettysburg's first win over Hampden-Sydney since 1997. Barton intercepted a pass late in the first quarter and returned it 19 yards to the Hampden-Sydney one yard line, setting up the Bullets' first touchdown which tied the game 7-7. He also recorded five tackles on the day. Dunn punted nine times for 283 yards, averaging 31.4 yards per kick. He had three punts downed inside the Tigers' 20 yard line, including those that began Hampden-Sydney's last two possessions of the game. The visitors started those drives at their own 13 and 18, respectively.

Sturges, who also returned one kick for 30 yards, eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark for the eighth time in his career and the first time in 2006. He and senior halfback Dusty Green (Idaville, Pa./Bermudian Springs), who ran 11 times for 126 yards became the first Bullet teammates in four years to each go over 100 yards rushing in the same game. Sturges and Green led Gettysburg to its first 300-yard rushing day since 2003.

For the season, Sturges has 203 yards on 40 carries for a 5.1 yards per carry average. He and Green rank fourth and fifth, respectively, in the conference in rushing yards per game. Sturges is averaging 101.5 yards per outing, with Green contributing another 87.0 yards per game on the ground. Sturges now has 1,804 yards for his career, leaving him just 196 yards short of becoming the Bullets' seventh 2,000-yard career rusher.

Gettysburg will return to action on Saturday when the Bullets hit the road for 12 p.m. game at Rochester.

Game Box Score

GETTYSBURG, PA—Gettysburg College snapped an eight game series losing streak en route to defeating the Tigers of Hampden-Sydney, 28-20, as the Bullets picked up their first victory of the 2006 season. The loss drops Hampden-Sydney to 0-2 for the first time since 1997, which is also the last time the Tigers fell to Gettysburg.

Gettysburg tallied 318 yards on the ground and scored four rushing touchdowns as tailback Tom Sturges racked up 174 rushing yards while running mate Dusty Green tacked on 126. Hampden-Sydney was bolstered by the strong play of running back Josh Simpson (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) who led the team with 75 yards rushing and one rushing touchdown, while he and junior receiver Drew Smith (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) each caught eight passes for 117 yards and a touchdown.

In the first quarter, Simpson put the Tigers on the scoreboard as he punched in his first TD of the year from two yards out to cap off Hampden-Sydney’s first drive of the game at the 12:58 mark. Gettysburg quarterback Matt Flynn then tied the game on a two-yard scramble of his own as the Bullets capitalized on an 18-yard interception return by Harold Barton deep in Tiger territory.

Hampden-Sydney was unable to convert on offense throughout the second quarter, failing on a 37-yard field goal attempt and missing out on three fourth down opportunities. The Bullets meanwhile, benefited from an 85-yard touchdown run by tailback Dusty Green midway through the quarter that put them in front, 14-7.

The Tigers tied the game at 14 in the second half on a nine yard touchdown reception by Josh Simpson, but just over two minutes later the Bullets capitalized on another interception in Tiger territory and went back on top, 21-14, with a 32 yard touchdown run by tailback Tom Sturges.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Bullets went up by two touchdowns as quarterback Mark Campo scored on a nine yard scramble to make the score 28-14 with 13:27 to play. The Tigers countered with a five yard Drew Smith touchdown catch at 4:13 to play, but it was all the Tiger offense could muster as Hampden-Sydney took its first back-to-back loss since 2001.

Hampden-Sydney freshman quarterback Craig Warnement (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic) completed 20-of-44 passes for 261 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions, while Gettysburg quarterbacks Matt Flynn and Mark Campo combined to complete 7-of-15 passes for 40 yards.

The Tiger defense was led by safeties Thomas Wiley (Gloucester, VA/Gloucester) and Barrett Laine (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry) who each recorded seven total tackles on the day, while Gettysburg was led by Scott Sheppard with six tackles, while Harold Barton and Rob Brassell combined for six stops and two interceptions.

Hampden-Sydney returns to action in two weeks when the Tigers host Old Dominion Athletic Conference-foe Guilford College on September 23, at 1 pm, a Hundley Stadium and Fulton Field.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Junior tailback Tom Sturges (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) and senior halfback Dusty Green (Idaville, Pa./Bermudian Springs) each rushed for more than 100 yards, and the Gettysburg defense picked off Hampden-Sydney three times to earn a 28-20 victory in non-conference action on Saturday at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.

Hampden-Sydney (0-2) scored on its first possession on a one-yard run by sophomore running back Josh Simpson. The Bullets countered with a one-yard run by freshman quarterback Matt Flynn (Northfield, N.J./Mainland Regional) following a 19-yard interception return by Barton late in the opening frame. Flynn completed four passes for 33 yards on the day. The Tigers had the ball first-and-10 on their own 15. Warnement was flushed out of the pocket and forced to throw from his own one yard line. Barton picked the ball off right in front of the Gettysburg bench and returned it to the one, where he was forced out of bounds.

The Bullets (1-1) got their first lead of the day after Hampden-Sydney turned it over on downs. On the first play of the ensuing drive, senior quarterback Mark Campo (Arendtsville, Pa./Biglerville) handed off to Green who broke up the middle and cut to the right sideline for the 85-yard score. Gettysburg took the 14-7 lead into halftime.

On Hampden-Sydney's first possession of the second half, Warnement hit Simpson with a shovel pass for a nine-yard score, capping a nine-play, 80-yard drive. Gettysburg answered with a seven-play, 81-yard drive that culminated in Sturges' 32-yard touchdown. The Bullets took a 21-14 lead and never trailed again.

Campo scored with 13:27 to go in the game on a nine-yard keeper. Just over nine minutes later, Warnament connected with Smith on a five-yard jump ball. The point-after attempt failed, setting the final score at 28-20. Gettysburg held the ball for the final 4:13 of the game, picking up three first downs to run out the clock.

Gettysburg returns to action next Saturday with a 12 p.m. game at Rochester. Hampden-Sydney will face Guilford in its home opener at 1 p.m.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The Gettysburg College football team will take on Hampden-Sydney at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium. The 2006 home opener marks the 13th meeting between Gettysburg and Hampden-Sydney in a series that dates back to 1982. The Tigers hold a 12-6 advantage in the all-time series, including last year's 56-40 victory at Hundley Stadium. Hampden-Sydney has won eight straight contests in the series, with the Bullets' last victory, a 33-7 decision, coming on the road on Sept. 13, 1997. In last season's shootout, Hunter McMillan (Middletown, Del./Wilmington Friends) broke three Gettysburg single-game records that had stood for at least 35 years. He completed 35-of-62 passes for 404 yards, becoming the first Bullet passer to pile up 400+ yards in a game. He also threw for a career-high four touchdowns. Shawn Hollingsworth (Chester, Pa./Wilmington Friends) hauled in a school-record 12 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns. Spencer Davidson (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) and Joe Fricchione each added a score. Despite scoring 33 points in the second half, Gettysburg was unable to overcome a 35-7 halftime deficit. Hampden-Sydney quarterback J.D. Ricca completed 31-of-50 passes for 491 yards and six touchdowns. He was also picked off twice by Nathan Smith and once by Michael Schmidt. The Tigers had seven receivers who each caught at least one pass on the day, six of whom collected at least 49 yards. Drew Smith caught nine passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns. Hampden-Sydney's Josh Simpson (eight carries for 108 yards) and Gettysburg's Tom Sturges (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) (23 carries for 103 yards) each went over 100 yards on the day in helping their teams pile up 609 and 557 yards of total offense, respectively.

Now in his 28th season as head coach, he has a 136-133-5 (.504) career record.

LAST TIME OUT
Senior halfback Dusty Green (Idaville, Pa./Bermudian Springs) recovered a fumble for a touchdown early in the first quarter, and the Bullets got their first safety in nearly four years, but Lebanon Valley's Charlie Parker scored on an 11-yard run with just 6:03 to play, giving the Flying Dutchmen a 13-12 victory last Saturday at Arnold Field in Annville, Pa. On the ensuing possession, Gettysburg drove the ball 38 yards on 11 plays and lined up for what would have been a game-winning 42-yard field goal, but it was blocked by Brian Cottone to preserve the victory for the home squad in both teams' season opener. Green ripped off a 39-yard run in the game on his way to a team-high 48 yards rushing. Senior defensive back Danny Tyrrell (White Hall, Md./North Harford) returned to two punts for 16 yards and two kicks for 35 yards, and junior defensive back Adam Fulmer (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) picked off a Lebanon Valley pass.

At McGee Field in Sewanee, Tenn., Hampden-Sydney scored 22 fourth-quarter points, but came up on the short end of a 42-35 decision against Sewanee. Freshman quarterback Craig Warnement made his collegiate debut in fine style, completing 22-of-30 passes (73.3 percent) for 233 yards and four touchdowns. His favorite target was Drew Smith, who caught 12 passes for 155 yards and two scores. Sewanee's Blake Mears had a huge day, running 27 times for 149 yards and three touchdowns and catching three passes for 109 yards and another touchdown.

TONS OF TACKLES
Gettysburg had nine players who either set or tied career highs for tackles in Saturday's game at Lebanon Valley. Sophomore defensive back David Rodriguez (Fort Belvoir, Va./Bishop Ireton), who was a junior varsity quarterback in 2005, made his first varsity action count. He made 14 total tackles, seven solo, to lead all players and forced a fumble. He enters this weekend as the Centennial Conference's leading tackler. Senior linebacker Harold Barton (Somerdale, N.J./Sterling) (13), junior linebacker James Holubowich (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola) (10) and sophomore defensive lineman Josh Jerrold (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury East) (10) all hit double digits in stops.

HONOR ROLL BULLETS
Sophomore defensive back David Rodriguez and senior halfback Dusty Green were both named to the Centennial Conference Weekly Honor Roll for their performances last week at Lebanon Valley. Rodriguez was on the defensive list after making 14 tackles and causing a fumble, while Green earned a special teams mention after recovering a fumble for a touchdown.

SCOUTING HAMPDEN-SYDNEY (0-1, 0-0 ODAC)
The Tigers return some major offensive fire power in 2006. Sophomore running back/wide receiver Josh Simpson ran for 729 yards and a 5.8 yards-per-carry average and caught 41 passes for 436 yards last season. In all, he scored 13 touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Drew Smith hauled in 79 passes for 1,284 yards and 13 touchdowns. Both had big days last Saturday at Sewanee. The Tigers graduated 2005 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year J.D. Ricca, who threw for 3,731 yards and 42 touchdowns, but freshman Craig Warnement filled in ably. He was 22-of-30 for 233 yards and four touchdowns last week. Junior linebacker Kyle Booker, one of Hampden-Sydney's top returning tacklers has moved from free safety. He collected 16 stops last week.

COACH'S CORNERSTREETER ON THE WEEK 1 LOSS TO LEBANON VALLEY
"We are obviously disappointed not to win. Both teams played hard to the end, and they should. This is college football, but it was not an effort problem. We just didn't make enough plays on offense, and the defense was on the field too long. We are trying to develop into a good team and get better from week to week."

STREETER ON BUILDING ON WEEK 1
"We are going to get a lot better, there's no question about it. When you have a young offensive line and young defense overall, you know you are going to get better if you keep pushing. If you play good defense, you are always in a position to win."

STREETER ON HAMPDEN-SYDNEY
"Every year is different. Different chemistry. Different people. They are coming off a loss as well, but they did put up some points. Offensively, they return four starters on the line, a good running back and a good wideout. They graduated a great quarterback, but they brought in two freshmen who are very athletic. They run a multiple no-huddle offense, and they will be in every formation imaginable. Hampden-Sydney's defense is very athletic. They run as well as any team we will face all year."
