GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The Gettysburg College football team will finish off its 2006 non-conference schedule against Denison on Saturday. Kickoff at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadiuim is set for 1 p.m. Saturday's contest marks the third meeting between Gettysburg and Denison in a new series that only dates back to 2004. The Big Red has won both of the previous games in the series; a 35-23 decision here at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium in 2004 and last year's 49-21 tilt at Deeds Field at Piper Stadium in Granville, Ohio. In last season's game, Larry Cappetto and Fred Lee each scored twice, and Jonathan Berg and Brian Mason added a rushing touchdown each to lead Denison to victory. Gettysburg's Tom Sturges (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) carried the ball 31 times for 151 yards and a touchdown. He cracked the 100-yard plateau for the third time in the season's first four games and would go on to do so three more times in 2005. Dusty Green (Idaville, Pa./Bermudian Springs) caught six passes for 76 yards and a score, while Hunter McMillan (Middletown, Del./Wilmington Friends) completed 15 of 36 passes for 202 yards. Mason and Cappetto each rushed for 56 yards to lead the Big Red, and Cappetto completed 18 of 27 passes for 287 yards and a touchdown pass to Mason. Frank Roe had five catches for 124 yards. Mason opened the scoring on a 31-yard run late in the first quarter, but the extra point was missed. After two penalties and an incompletion, McMillan hit Green for a 29-yard touchdown pass to open the second quarter. Josh Huson (McLean, Va./McLean) tacked on the extra point, giving Gettysburg a 7-6 lead, but the Big Red would score four of the game's next five touchdowns to take the lead for good.
Last Time Out
Freshman quarterback Matt Flynn (Northfield, N.J./Mainland Regional) tied the Gettysburg single-game record for touchdown passes with five, but it was not enough in a 54-42 loss to Rochester in non-conference action at Edwin Fauver Stadium. Yellowjackets' freshman Kapps Killingstad also tied Rochester's school record with four touchdown passes in the game. In a shootout that featured 981 yards of offense, including 534 by the Bullets, and 19 penalties for 159 yards, Flynn completed 18 of 31 passes for 288 yards in the most extensive action of his young career. He connected on scoring strikes with four different players in the game, including senior tailback Dusty Green, who scored twice. His first came on a flare into the left flat that Green hauled in and took 59 yards, tip-toeing up the sideline to get Gettysburg on the board early in the second quarter. Junior wide receiver Matthew Welsh (Lafayette Hill, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) also had a big day, hauling in seven passes for 116 yards and a touchdown. Both the reception and yardage marks were game and career highs. Out of the backfield, junior tailback Tom Sturges carried the ball 27 times for 159 yards and a touchdown. He is now just 37 yards away from becoming Gettysburg's seventh 2,000-yard rusher.
At Deeds Field at Piper Stadium, Denison's Fred Lee scored on the Big Red's first possession of the game, but Case Western Reserve got a safety and two touchdowns in a four-minute span to take a lead it would never give up. Lee scored again with just 17 seconds to play in the first quarter. That would be all the offense for the Big Red in the first night game played at home since 1941. Case Western got another safety in the second quarter and used good clock management to earn the 27-14 victory. Lee carried the ball 11 times for 57 yards and scored twice, proving to be Denison's main source of offense on the night. The Big Red was picked off four times.
Big-Time Opening Act
Freshman Matt Flynn had thrown six passes in the first two games of the season, but in his first extended action as a college quarterback, he broke out in a big way. He came off the bench late in the first quarter last Saturday at Rochester and tied a Gettysburg record with five touchdown passes in the game. He was 18-for-31 with 288 yards and rushed four times for 17 yards for a 305-yard total offensive performance. He connected with four different players for scoring passing covering 59, 15, 30, eight and 14 yards. The first Bullet to throw five touchdown passes in one game was Ross Sachs against Bucknell in 1949. Chris Adams tied the mark in 1994 against Ursinus. As a result of his big day, Flynn became the second straight Gettysburg player named Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Junior tailback Tom Sturges achieved the feat after a good effort against Hampden-Sydney on Sept. 9.
Mr. Consistency
After a solid freshman campaign in 2004, junior tailback Tom Sturges has played in all 13 of Gettysburg's games since the beginning of the 2005 season. In that stretch, he has rushed for over 100 yards eight times, including each of the last two weeks. He was named Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his 26-carry, 174-yard performance against Hampden-Sydney. He followed it with a 27-rush, 159-yard outing at Rochester that included the longest run of his career, a 36-yard jaunt. He also had a 32-yard touchdown run in each game. Against Rochester, he had three catches for 31 yards and returned four kickoffs for 72 yards to put together a career-high 231 all-purpose yards on the day. For the season, Sturges has carried the ball 67 times for 362 yards and two touchdowns, caught four passes for 34 yards and returned six kicks for 135 yards to lead the conference in both rushing and all-purpose yards.
Nearly Two-Grand Man
Junior tailback Tom Sturges' early-season performance has pushed his career rushing total to 1,963 yards, leaving him just 37 yards short of becoming Gettysburg's seventh 2,000-yard rusher. He is also just 90 yards behind Paul Martin for sixth place. He still has a ways to go to reach the top of the list, however. Paul Smith, who played from 1996-99, is still 3,242 yards ahead of Sturges at 5,205.
On the National Stage
Several Gettysburg players have reached the national top 50 in various statistical categories. Junior tailback Tom Sturges leads the charge. He ranks 18th in all-purpose yards with 177.0 per contest and 20th in rushing with 120.7 yards per game. Sturges is just outside the top 50 in another category, ranking 52nd in kickoff return average. He has returned six kicks an average of 22.5 yards. Freshman quarterback Matt Flynn is 42nd with a 140.5 passing efficiency rating, and junior cornerback Adam Fulmer (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) ranks 48th with 1.7 passes defended per game. As a team, Gettysburg is 24th in the nation, averaging 206.3 rushing yards per game and 45th with a +1.0 average turnover margin.
Green Means Go
Senior halfback Dusty Green has had a big opening month of the 2006 season. He is Gettysburg's leading scorer with four touchdowns; two receiving, one rushing and one on a fumble recovery. In the Hampden-Sydney game, he rumbled 85 yards on a rushing play to record the Bullets' first 80-yard run in four years. Last weekend, he caught a 59-yard touchdown pass from Matt Flynn. It was the first 50-yard reception by a Gettysburg player since 2004. Overall, Green has 184 yards rushing on 20 carries and 114 receiving yards on eight catches. He ranks second on the team in all of those categories.
Pass-Catching Combo
Junior wide receiver Matthew Welsh and senior halfback Dusty Green nearly became the first Gettysburg teammates in over 27 years to each have 100 yards receiving in the same game. Welsh set career highs with seven catches for 116 yards and added a touchdown. Green caught five balls for 95 yards and two scores.
Offensive Outburst
After scoring just 12 points at Lebanon Valley in the season opener, the Bullets have exploded for 28 against Hampden-Sydney and 42 against Rochester in the last two weeks. Gettysburg leads the conference in scoring offense (27.3 points per game), rushing offense (206.3 yards per game) and total offense (339.7 yards per game). The Bullets have outrushed the next best ground team in the conference by nearly 50 yards per game.
Making the Stops
Gettysburg has six players among the top 20 tacklers in the Centennial Conference. Senior linebacker Harold Barton (Somerdale, N.J./Sterling) is third with 9.3 stops per game. Sophomore defensive back David Rodriguez (Fort Belvoir, Va./Bishop Ireton) has 9.0 tackles per game, and junior linebacker James Holubowich (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola) (8.3), sophomore defensive end Josh Jerrold (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury East) (8.0), sophomore linebacker Charlie Occhipinti (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) (6.7) and senior defensive end Stevenson Foote (Huntingtown, Md./Calvert) (6.3) are not far behind. Barton is 85th in the nation, while Rodriguez ranks 96th.

Coming into preseason camp, one of Gettysburg's biggest question marks was an offensive line that had to replace four starters from the Centennial Conference's best rushing attack in 2005. After an uneven performance at Lebanon Valley on Sept. 2, the Bullets' front five has started to come together. The quintet of seniors Rick Finnegan (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) (C) and Dain Alaia (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem) (RG), junior James Russell (Amityville, N.Y./Amityville Memorial) (LT) and sophomores Jay Hagerman (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) (LG) and Sam Walthall (Uniondale, N.Y./Woodlands) (RT) paved the way for Gettysburg's best rushing effort in several years against Hampden-Sydney. Two players gained over 100 yards rushing for the first time since 2002, and Gettysburg rushed for 318 yards as a team, eclipsing the 300-yard mark for the first time in three years. Additionally, quarterbacks Mark Campo (Arendtsville, Pa./Biglerville) and Matt Flynn were not sacked during the game, making Hampden-Sydney the first sackless Gettysburg opponent since 2004. Last Saturday at Rochester, the offensive line's success continued, as the Bullets gained 534 total yards, including 216 on the ground. They only allowed one sack on the day and helped Flynn tie the Gettysburg single-game record with five touchdown passes.
Head of the Class
Gettysburg head coach Barry Streeter is the longest-tenured and winningest football coach in Gettysburg history. He surpassed Hen Bream (1927-51), who coached for 22 seasons, in 2000. Streeter won his 105th career game against Muhlenberg in 1995 to take over the career wins lead. Now in his 28th season as head coach, he has a 137-134-5 (.505) career record.
Scouting Denison (0-2, 0-0 NCAC)
The Big Red returns 14 starters, seven on each side of the ball, from a team that was 5-5 a year ago and finished 3-4 to tie for fifth in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Among the returnees on offense is senior running back Fred Lee, who carried the ball 183 times for 818 yards (4.5 yards per carry) in 2005. He scored seven rushing touchdowns. Sophomore running back Brian Mason also returns after a big rookie campaign during which he carried 40 times for 172 yards and finished second on the team with five rushing touchdowns. On defense, senior cornerback Andrew Terlecky returns with his team-high five interceptions from a year ago. He also registered 40 tackles. Denison has yet to come away with a win in 2006, but it has played a pair of closely contested games. A 46-yard pass by Randolph-Macon with five seconds to play in regulation broke a 14-14 tie to hand the Big Red a loss in the season opener. Two weeks ago, Case Western Reserve scored a safety and two touchdowns after Denison got an early touchdown to take a lead it would not relinquish. The Big Red is coming off a bye week today. Lee has carried the ball 19 times for 77 yards and two touchdowns, and sophomore quarterback Brian Herbe is 27-for-46 for 202 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Denison has struggled with turnovers, throwing six interceptions and losing a fumble, but the defense has held opponents to just 94.0 rushing yards per game.
