GETTYSBURG - Gettysburg rushed for 318 yards and snapped a six-game losing streak to Hampden-Sydney, scoring a 28-20 win over the Tigers yesterday at Musselman Stadium.
Tom Sturges led the way for the Bullets (1-1), rushing for 174 yards on 26 attempts, including a 32-yard scoring run in the third quarter.
Hampden-Sydney (0-2) and Gettysburg exchanged touchdowns in the first period, with Josh Simpson getting things started on a 1-yard plunge for the Tigers just over two minutes into the game. Matt Flynn came back with the 1-yard equalizer for Gettysburg with 2:41 remaining in the opening quarter.
Dusty Green gave Gettysburg its first lead with an 85-yard scoring run midway through the second quarter.
Josh Simpson tied it up for Hampden-Sydney, catching a 9-yard scoring pass from Craig Warnement at 8:53 of the third quarter.
Sturges then put Gettysburg up for good, capping a seven-play, 81-yard drive with his 32-yard touchdown run just a little over two minutes later.
Mark Campo provided an insurance touchdown for the Bullets with a 9-yard run early in the final quarter.
Drew Smith closed out the scoring for Hampden-Sydney, catching a 5-yard touchdown pass from Warnement with 4:13 remaining.
