GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior offensive lineman James Russell (Amityville, N.Y./Amityville Memorial) of the Gettysburg College football team has been named to the D3football.com All-South Region Second Team, it was recently announced.

Russell, a left tackle who was named to the All-Centennial Conference First Team last month, helped block for an offense that led the conference in several categories and is ranked among the best in Division III. Gettysburg was also tops in the conference and is 45th in Division III in total offense (404.7). In addition, Russell was part of an offensive line that led the Centennial and is tied for 19th nationally in sacks against (1.09 per game).

A two-year starter, Russell also made some noise on the scoreboard this fall, rushing for his second career touchdown in the team’s regular season finale against Franklin & Marshall College on Nov. 10.

Sturges Selected to AFCA Coaches' All-America Team

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior tailback Tom Sturges (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) has racked up plenty of awards during his phenomenal four-year career for the Gettysburg College football team, but his latest honor may have been his most impressive.

Sturges has been named to the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division III All-America Team, it was recently announced.

Sturges becomes Gettysburg’s first AFCA All-American since Paul Smith ’00 made the team as a kick returner in 1999, and he is the first non-specialist in the Centennial Conference to earn a spot on the team since McDaniel defensive back Jason Wingeart in 2001. Sturges was named to the Don Hansen’s Football Gazette Honorable Mention All-America Team in 2006.

The award comes on the heels of Sturges’ finest season as a Bullet, as he rushed for a career-best 1,545 yards and 14 touchdowns, leading his team to a 6-5 record and an appearance in the ECAC Southwest Bowl. He led the Centennial Conference in rushing and became the conference’s first-ever three-time rushing champion. His 140.5 yards per game is currently eighth in Division III, and he also led the conference in all-purpose yards for the third straight season with 148.0 per game and finished second in overall touchdowns with 15. He was honored as the Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Year, also Gettysburg’s first since Smith received the same award in 1999, and he captured First Team All-Centennial honors for the third year in a row.

For his career, Sturges finished with 4,287 rushing yards, second all-time at Gettysburg and fourth in Centennial Conference history. He also piled up 4,841 all-purpose yards, second in school history and eighth in Centennial annals, while scoring 31 touchdowns.

The AFCA Division III All-America Team consists of 25 players: 11 on offense, 11 on defense, and three specialists. It is chosen by Division III coaches.
