Flynn, Jerrold Garner POW Recognition
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior quarterback Matt Flynn (Northfield, N.J./Mainland Regional) and senior defensive end Josh Jerrold (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury East) of the Gettysburg College football have earned player of the week honors for their performances in the team’s team win over Ursinus College this past Saturday.
Flynn picked up his second award of the week, as he was named the ECAC Southwest Region Offensive Player of the Week. On Sunday, he was chosen as the Centennial Conference Offensive POW.
Jerrold was honored with a spot on the D3football.com national Team of the Week.
Flynn posted one of the top passing performances in school history on Saturday in the Bullets 38-7 Centennial Conference victory over the Bears. Completing 16-of-23 passes, he threw for a career-high 399 yards – just five shy of the school record – and three touchdowns. Flynn, who was not intercepted, threw a 63-yard touchdown pass on Gettysburg’s first play from scrimmage, and he added TD strikes of 25 and 15 yards to lead the Bullets to their first victory of the season.
With his final touchdown pass on Saturday – the 32nd of his career – Flynn pulled to within one of the school record held by Dennis Flaherty ’01.
For the season, Flynn has thrown for 1,329 yards and eight touchdowns while completing 60.7% of his passes. He currently leads the Centennial Conference in both passing (265.8 yards per game) and total offense (285.4 ypg), and he ranks 21st in Division III in total offense.
Jerrold recorded 2.5 sacks and forced three fumbles to lead a Gettysburg defensive effort that totaled seven sacks and limited Ursinus to 229 total yards. Jerrold’s sacks resulted in 21 yards lost, and he finished with six tackles (three solo).
Jerrold leads the Bullets and the Centennial Conference in sacks (6.5), a mark that ties him for ninth among the Division III leaders. He has made 28 tackles and also leads the conference with 7.5 tackles for loss.
Gettysburg (1-4, 1-2 CC) returns to action on Saturday, when it hosts Moravian College in a Centennial Conference game at 1 p.m.
