Flynn, Defense Lift Bullets to First Win of Season
Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior Matt Flynn (Northfield, N.J./Mainland Regional) threw for a career-high 399 yards – five shy of the school record – and three touchdowns on 16-of-23 passing while the Bullets defense rolled up seven sacks as Gettysburg cruised to a 38-7 Centennial Conference victory over Ursinus College Saturday afternoon in front of a large Family Day crowd at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
Flynn, who threw a 63-yard touchdown pass to senior tight end David Rodriguez (Fort Belvoir, Va./Bishop Ireton) on Gettysburg’s first play from scrimmage, came up just short of the single-game school record of 404 yards set by Hunter McMillan ’08 against Hampden-Sydney in 2005. He has now thrown 32 touchdown passes for his career, just one shy of the school record set by Dennis Flaherty ’01 from 1997-2000.
The Bullets (1-4, 1-2 CC), who had a 99-yard touchdown drive late in the game, racked up a season-high 539 yards of total offense, their highest output since putting up 557 in McMillan’s school-record passing performance in 2005 against Hampden-Sydney. Gettysburg, which never trailed and scored 31 unanswered points after the Bears tied it up in the first quarter, held Ursinus (2-2, 1-1 CC) to 229 yards.
Gettysburg’s seven sacks were the most by the Bullets since their eight-sack effort in a 45-10 win over Averett on Sept. 28, 2002. Leading the defensive effort was senior defensive end Josh Jerrold (Yardley, Pa./East Pennsbury), who had 2.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, and five tackles. Sophomore defensive end Vincent Ferrante (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) also had 2.5 sacks for the Bullets, who had made just four sacks over their first four games.
Sophomore receiver Gavin Jablonski (Allenwood, N.J./Wall) finished with six receptions for 120 yards, both career-highs, for the Bullets while Rodriguez had two catches for a career-high 124 yards. Junior wing Ricky Manigat (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) added three receptions for 65 yards and a touchdown.
Pacing the Bullets rushing game was sophomore tailback Jamel Mutunga (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air), who ran for 64 yards and one touchdown on 20 carries while sophomore wing Charles Curcio (Hammonton, N.J./St. Joseph) carried the ball six times for 59 yards and a TD. He finished with 159 all-purpose yards.
Senior kicker Josh Huson (McLean, Va./McLean) scored eight points for the Bullets, kicking a 25-yard field goal while going 5-for-5 on extra-point attempts, bringing his career PAT total to 99.
Dye threw for 149 yards on 17-of-33 passing while Mark Jaskowski rushed for 55 yards on 17 carries for the Bears.
After forcing a three-and-out on the opening possession, Flynn found Rodriguez wide open deep down the middle of the field, and he raced untouched into the end zone for his first collegiate touchdown. It was the first time Gettysburg scored on its first offensive play since Oct. 22, 1983 on a Paul Rosengrant 77-yard reverse.
The Bears answered with their lone scoring drive, going 54 yards on 15 plays. Dye ran for the final nine yards of the march, scrambling for an 8-yard run on third-and-8 to give Ursinus a first-and-goal at the Gettysburg-1. He dove into the end zone on the next play as the Bears pulled even at 7-7 midway through the first quarter.
On its next two possessions, Gettysburg missed a 36-yard field goal and fumbled, but regrouped for a pair of scoring drives before the end of the half. Early in the second quarter, the Bullets drove to the Ursinus-2, but Manigat was tackled for a loss on a third-and-goal rush. But that’s when Huson knocked through his field goal to put his team on top to stay at 10-7 with 5:47 showing.
The Bullet defense then turned up the heat, sacking Dye on back-to-back plays to force the Bears third punt of the game. After a Greg Zara 51-yarder bounced through the end zone for a touchback, Gettysburg needed just 1:32 to drive the 80 yards for its second touchdown of the game. Flynn sparked the drive with a 25-yard catch-and-run pass to Mutunga, putting the Bullets at the Ursinus-44, and six plays later he connected over the middle to Manigat, who took a couple of hits before bulling his way to pay dirt, making it a 17-7 game with 46 ticks showing on the first-half clock.
The Gettysburg offense picked up where it left off on the opening drive of the second half, going 82 yards on 10 plays, with Flynn hitting Curcio for a 15-yard touchdown pass. The Bullet defense followed suit, holding the Bears to negative-14 yards on their first two possessions. Gettysburg got to Dye for a sack on Ursinus’ first two plays of the half, with Jerrold making a solo hit for a 15-yard loss before teaming up with Ferrante for a 4-yarder. The Bullets pushed their lead to 31-7 with 3:26 left in the third quarter when Mutunga took a pitch right and ran into the end zone from 5 yards out. One play earlier, Flynn found Jablonski for a 49-yard pass.
Gettysburg’s final scoring drive was set up by an interception from sophomore cornerback Tairi Mobley (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown), who came down with an underthrown ball at the Bullet-1 for his first collegiate pick on the next-to-last play of the third quarter. But on the first play of the fourth quarter, Flynn extricated his team from its precarious field position when he hit Rodriguez for another long pass, this one going for 61 yards to the Ursinus-38. Four plays later, Curcio took a pitch left and raced in for a 20-yard touchdown run. Huson’s final extra point set the final score with 12:30 left.
Sophomore cornerback John Dickerson (Northfield, N.J./Mainland Regional) snuffed out the Bears final drive, when he broke up a pass in the corner of the end zone on a fourth-and-goal from the 4-yard line with 44 seconds to go.
Mobley and senior linebacker Terence Hartigan (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) made a game-high eight tackles apiece for the Bullets while senior defensive end Conor Quinn (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) made seven hits, including 3.0 for loss and 1.0 sack. Freshman defensive end Gabe Gallante (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) also got into the sack attack, making the first of his collegiate career late in the game.
Linebacker Nate Mast led Ursinus with seven tackles.
Gettysburg returns home next Saturday, when it takes on Moravian College in another Centennial Conference match-up.
