Moravian Week

Let's start the look ahead to Saturday's home game with Moravian. The following is taken from the D3Football.com Kick-off Edition:

Moravian Greyhounds

Last playoff appearance: 2005
Last year: 6-4, 4-4 CC
Last conference title: 1988
2007 NCAA ranking, total offense: 109
2007 NCAA ranking, total defense: 129
Wins increase from 06-07: Plus-2
Preseason ranking: 84 of 239
Players who started camp: 99
Head coach: Scot Dapp, 22nd year, 127-88-1
Starters returning: 17 (six offense, nine defense, two specialists)

Position battle to watch: The offensive line. Though two starters return -- Timothy McBride and Andrew Grando -- the Greyhounds must replace the other three players, including All-Centennial lineman Eric Adams. Dapp expects upperclassmen like senior Wes Harpel and sophomores Joey Begany and Daniel Cancelliere to compete for the spots, as well as some of the incoming freshmen.

Pressure is on: The running backs to stay healthy. Moravian has been decimated by injuries in the backfield for the past two seasons. Though Dapp said returning starters Tyler McCambridge and Morgan deRouen are talented, they must stay healthy.

Where did he come from? Tight end Brian Dencker, a junior, is the likely candidate to replace the graduated Kris Bisci. Though he played in all 10 games, Dencker was overshadowed by Bisci, who Dapp called their "go-to" guy.

Their season will be defined by: The season-ending game against Lehigh Valley rival Muhlenberg. If the Greyhounds can stay healthy, some believe the game could decide the conference championship. If they're not, it could turn into a game like 2007, when the Mules cruised to a 35-0 victory.

Predicted record: 9-1, 7-1

Capsule: Last season started with promise for the Greyhounds: Moravian won six of its first eight games -- losing two by eight total points -- before injuries began piling up, derailing the final two weeks. With those injuries healed, nine starters return on defense. Three of the four in the secondary return, which should mean an improvement in the defense's lagging numbers against the pass in 2007 (eighth in the conference at 225.7 yards per game). Offensively, the line loses three starters but several skill players are back, notably All-Conference quarterback Marc Braxmeier. A healthy backfield will give the Greyhounds better offensive balance. Even with all the returners, the Greyhounds were picked fifth in the preseason coaches' poll.
