From Gettysburg College:

Football to Visit Hampden-Sydney in Road Opener

Hitting the RoadComing off a season-opening 49-25 win over Lebanon Valley College, the Bullets play their first road game of the season when they visit Hampden-Sydney College in another non-conference outing. A victory on Saturday would give Gettysburg its first 2-0 start since 1993, when the Bullets defeated Catholic 14-6 in their season opener before defeating McDaniel 38-17.

Radio Coverage
Saturday's game will be broadcast on WFLO 95.7 FM/870 AM and webcast at http://hams-av.hsc.edu/football/.

The Series
Hampden-Sydney leads Gettysburg 12-7 in the all-time series that dates back to 1982. Last season, the Bullets broke an eight-game losing streak to Hampden-Sydney with a home victory over the Tigers.

Last Week
Senior tailback Tom Sturges scored four touchdowns and rushed for a career-high 220 yards while sophomore quarterback Matt Flynn threw for 265 yards and four touchdowns as the Bullets toppled Lebanon Valley 49-25 in their season opener. Gettysburg, which racked up 537 yards of total offense, never trailed after jumping to a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Bullets led 35-25 at halftime following a wild second quarter that featured seven combined touchdowns. Lebanon Valley scored 25 points in the second quarter, and those would prove to be the Flying Dutchmen’s final points of the game as the Bullets blanked LVC in the second half. Each of Gettysburg’s first two touchdowns were set up by interceptions from safeties David Rodriguez and Brett Robinson. Sophomore halfback Ricky Manigat hauled in three passes for 79 yards and a pair of touchdowns while senior receiver Matt Welsh had four catches for 75 yards and a touchdown. Senior linebacker Harold Barton led the Bullets with 13 tackles while junior defensive tackle Conor Quinn made 10 hits, including one sack.

Last Season’s Game
Tom Sturges and Dusty Green each rushed for more than 100 yards and the Gettysburg defense recorded three interceptions as the Bullets won their home opener with a 28-20 victory over Hampden-Sydney at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium. Sturges carried the ball 26 times for 174 yards and one touchdown while Green had 11 rushes for 126 yards and a TD. Among’s Green’s carries was an 85-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. The Bullets took the lead for good on a 32-yard touchdown run from Sturges with 6:35 left in the third quarter. Harold Barton, Rob Brassell, and Ian Evans all had interceptions for Gettysburg.

Scouting Hampden-Sydney
The Tigers are coming off a tough 17-16 opening-day loss to Johns Hopkins University. Hampden-Sydney was playing its inaugural game in its new Lewis C. Everett Stadium. The Tigers led 16-10 with 13:09 left in the game after a 10-yard touchdown pass from Corey Sedlar to Michael Brooks. However, the extra point was blocked, and it would prove to be the difference as the Blue Jays went ahead on a 1-yard touchdown run and extra point with 1:34 on the clock. The Tigers still had a chance to win the game in the closing seconds, but a 47-yard field goal attempt was also blocked. Sedlar, who was making his collegiate debut, finished with 170 yards on 16-of-25 passing for the Tigers while Drew Smith caught 11 passes for 137 yards. Hampden-Sydney struggled on the ground, however, managing only 12 yards on 27 attempts.

Last season, Hampden-Sydney finished 4-6, the team’s first losing season since 2000, but went 4-2 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) to finish in a three-way tie for second in the conference standings. The Tigers return 13 starters from the 2006 campaign, including All-ODAC receiver Drew Smith, who caught 52 passes for 696 yards and six touchdowns last season. Defensively, Hampden-Sydney brings back its top two leading tackles from a year ago in cornerback Jamie Edlow and linebacker Kyle Booker.

Conference Honors
Senior tailback Tom Sturges was named the Centennial Conference Offensive Co-Player of the Week following his 220-yard rushing, four-touchdown performance against Lebanon Valley. It was the eighth time in his career that Sturges earned Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Closing in on 3,000
Sturges, who moved into fifth on Gettysburg’s career rushing list against Lebanon Valley, can become just the fifth 3,000-yard rusher in school history with an additional 38 yards.

Gettysburg’s 2,000-yard rushing club is listed below:

Player Years Att. Yds.
Paul Smith 1996-99 881 5,205
Dwayne Marcus 1991-94 690 3,852
Scott Dudak 1978-81 736 3,774
Ray Condren 1981-84 667 3,312
Tom Sturges 2004-07 658 2,962
Shannon Forsythe 1992-95 497 2,747
Paul Martin 1982-85 398 2,053

One Good Half
Sophomore quarterback Matt Flynn recorded an outstanding first half in the Bullets’ win over the Dutchmen. Over the game’s opening 30 minutes, Flynn completed 13-of-20 passes for 235 yards and all four of his touchdown passes. He attempted only six passes the rest of the game, as Gettysburg, holding a double-digit lead the entire second half, looked to run out the clock.

Lighting up the Scoreboard
Gettysburg’s 49 points scored against Lebanon Valley marked the team’s highest offensive output since, ironically, its 52-7 win over the Flying Dutchmen on Sept. 6, 2003. That victory was the 500th in Gettysburg football history and the first game played on the artificial surface of Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.

Home, Sweet Home
Gettysburg has enjoyed incredible success at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium recently. With their victory over Lebanon Valley, the Bullets won their ninth straight home game. Last year, the Bullets posted a perfect 5-0 record on their home turf. They have not lost at home since falling 41-20 to Rochester on Sept. 17, 2005.

Head of the Class
Gettysburg head coach Barry Streeter is the longest-tenured and winningest football coach in Gettysburg history. He surpassed Hen Bream (1927-51), who coached for 22 seasons, in 2000. Streeter won his 105th career game against Muhlenberg in 1995 to take over the career wins lead. Now in his 29th season as head coach, he has a 141-137-5 (.507) career record.

Coaches’ Corner
Head coach Barry Streeter on Tom Sturges’ Career-High 220-Yard Rushing Performance
“I had no idea how many yards he had. I knew he had over 100, but I didn’t know he had over 200. He gets better when [the conditions] get tougher. In the fourth quarter, he came through when we just wanted to run the ball and let the clock run.” (Sturges totaled 86 rushing yards in the fourth quarter.)

Streeter on Matt Flynn’s 265-Yard, Four-Touchdown Performance
“He made some really good decisions. He threw the ball away when he needed to, and his accuracy was good. He showed some really nice poise under pressure.”

Streeter on Shutting Out Lebanon Valley Over Three Quarters
“In the first quarter, I thought we played pretty good defense. But in the second quarter, we gave up a lot of yards on penalties on their first scoring drive. Then we blew a coverage on their second touchdown [a 73-yard touchdown pass]. Lebanon Valley has some really good athletes who were making plays, and our mistakes compounded that. But our defense snapped back in the second half, and our offense did a good job of running out the clock.”

Streeter on Hampden-Sydney
“They’re always athletic. They run very well on defense, and offensively they show a lot of different formations - multiple plays, multiple screens. I anticipate it being another tough game.”
