Dickinson at Gettysburg Preview

From the Gettysburg College Website:

Dickinson at Gettysburg – Saturday, Nov. 5, 2005 – 1 p.m.

OPENING KICKOFF: Today’s Centennial Conference (CC) game marks the 71st meeting between Gettysburg (3-5, 2-2 CC) and Dickinson (3-5, 2-2 CC) in a series that dates back to 1892, the Bullets’ third year of intercollegiate football. Gettysburg holds a 39-29-2 advantage in the all-time series, but the Red Devils are unbeaten over the last 11 meetings between the two programs (10-0-1). In last year’s meeting, Keven Williams threw for 149 yards and four touchdowns – two apiece to Gerald O’Hara and Clay Merris – to lead Dickinson over Gettysburg 27-6 on Nov. 6, 2004 in Carlisle. Joe Gossweiler threw a 47-yard touchdown pass to Derek Landi for the Bullets’ only points.

THE TRADITION OF THE BUCKET: Since 1938, the winner of the Dickinson-Gettysburg game has been presented with The Little Brown Bucket, a gift of Dickinson trustee Walter Stouffer and Gettysburg trustee George Hummel in November 1938. The Bucket is a mahogany bucket with silver hoops, a silver handle and the seals of both institutions. It is engraved with the name of the winner of each annual battle between the Bullets and Red Devils.

LAST TIME OUT: Junior HB Dusty Green (Idaville, PA/Bermudian Springs) broke a 75-yard touchdown run and sophomore CB Adam Fulmer (Halifax, PA/Halifax) returned one of his two interceptions 54 yards to set up a 28-yard field goal by freshman K Josh Huson (McLean, VA/McLean), lifting Gettysburg over Muhlenberg 10-3 last Saturday at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium. The Bullets yielded only 209 total yards while posting their first win over the Mules since 1999. In Carlisle, Hampden-Sydney used four straight touchdowns in a 7-minute, 20-second span of the third quarter to turn a 24-21 lead into a 52-21 halftime advantage, knocking off Dickinson 66-27 on Saturday. Red Devil sophomore QB Matt Torchia completed 18 of 23 passes for 259 yards and one touchdown, and also ran for another score in the loss.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Senior LB Michael Schmidt (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) was named the CC Defensive Player of the Week after his performance against Muhlenberg. Schmidt paced the Gettysburg defense with a season-high 16 tackles, including nine solo stops and 1.5 sacks.

ALSO OUTSTANDING: Dusty Green and senior P Tom Pettit (Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) were selected as CC Outstanding Performers for their efforts against the Mules. Green provided the game’s only touchdown by breaking a 75-yard sweep around right end late in the third quarter. Pettit punted a season-high 12 times, averaging 36.1 yards per kick.

AHEAD OF THE PACK: With 59 rushing yards last Saturday, sophomore TB Tom Sturges (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) continued his charge toward a 1,000-yard season. Sturges leads the CC in carries (217), rushing yards (932) and yards per game (116.5), and has already run for the most yards by a Bullet since Paul Smith rolled up 1,546 rushing yards in 1999. Sturges would be the first Gettysburg back to lead the CC in rushing since Smith in 1999.

IN THE TRENCHES: In addition to the fleet-footed Sturges, a veteran offensive line is helping Gettysburg lead the CC in rushing offense (154.1 yards per game). The quintet of senior LT John Burger (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.), senior LG Brandon Smith (Lititz, PA/Manheim Twp.), senior C Keith Phillips (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa), junior RG Dain Alaia (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY/Sachem) and senior RT Enoch Boateng (Vienna, VA/W.T. Woodson) has started every game this season.

WINGING IT: Sophomore QB Hunter McMillan (Middletown, DE/Wilmington Friends) has completed 98 of 205 passes for 1,088 yards and six touchdowns in 2005, the most passing yards in one season by a Bullet signal-caller since Dennis Flaherty compiled a program-record 2,095 in 2000.

LONG DISTANCE: Dusty Green’s 75-yard scoring run was his fourth touchdown of the season, one behind Tom Sturges for the team lead. Green’s gallop was Gettysburg’s longest play from scrimmage since an 85-yard touchdown pass from Nick Nocar to Bryan Wheatly against McDaniel on Oct. 11, 2003.

MANY HAPPY RETURNS: Senior DB Nathan Smith (Hanover, PA/Cooperstown Central [NY]) leads the CC and ranks fifth in Division III with an average of 32.2 yards per kickoff return. Smith has already tied the CC single-season record for kickoff-return touchdowns (3) while breaking a tie with Muhlenberg’s Joshua Carter for the conference’s career mark (5).

SACK ATTACK: Junior LB Harold Barton (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) continued to roll up the sacks on Saturday, recording 1.5 against the Mules to increase his team-leading total to 5.5. Barton paces the squad with 85 tackles and ranks third in the CC with 10.6 tackles per game. Nationally, he is ninth in Division III with 7.1 solo tackles per game.

BULLET POINTS: Senior DB Daniel Silva (Lanham, MD/Eleanor Roosevelt) and Nathan Smith each recorded their team-leading third interception of the year against Muhlenberg... Tom Sturges is tied for 27th in Division III with 116.5 rushing yards per game... Gettysburg ranks second in the CC in total offense (307.0 yards per game)... The Bullets are trying to go 4-1 at home for the first season since 1994.

THE WORD ON DICKINSON: Dickinson enters today’s CC showdown looking to bounce back from a 66-27 loss to high-powered Hampden-Sydney last Saturday in Carlisle. The Red Devils remain alive for a share of their second straight conference title thanks to Ursinus’ 21-17 upset of Johns Hopkins. Junior QB Matt Torchia has completed 115 of 205 passes (56.1 percent) for 1,163 yards and five touchdowns in his first season as the Red Devils’ starter. Torchia ranks third in the CC in both passing yards per game (145.4) and pass efficiency (104.0). Senior WR Ryan Nelson was chosen as a CC Outstanding Peformer after making four catches for 107 yards and one touchdown against Hampden-Sydney. Nelson has 18 receptions for a team-high 278 yards and two touchdowns this season. Junior TE Ryan Stearrett leads Dickinson with 22 receptions for 200 yards while senior WR Arwin Gbolie is the third member of the squad’s 200-yard club with 15 grabs for 206 yards and two touchdowns. Senior TB Dwight Phyall has carried 97 times for 306 yards and three touchdowns this season, all team-high totals. Phyall ranks fourth in the CC with 51.0 rushing yards per game. Sophomore FB Michael D’Amico is the Red Devils’ second-leading rusher with 237 yards on 56 carries. Junior S Andrew Ackley leads the CC with seven interceptions this season and is tied for third in Division III with 0.9 interceptions per game. Ackley also ranks third on the team with 53 tackles. Sophomore LB Mike O’Donnell is Dickinson’s leader with 64 total tackles, and has also recorded three interceptions, five pass breakups and three forced fumbles.

COACH’S CORNER: Barry Streeter is in his 27th season as the head coach at Gettysburg, the longest coaching tenure in program history. He has posted a 135-130-5 record while guiding the Bullets to three CC championships and a pair of NCAA playoff victories. He ranks first among active CC coaches in both conference victories (73) and overall wins (135). Darwin Breaux has posted a 78-52-1 record in 13 seasons at Dickinson. A former assistant under Streeter at Gettysburg, he led the Red Devils to CC championships in 1993, 1994 and 2004, guiding the 1994 team to a berth in the NCAA tournament following a 10-0 season.

STREETER ON HIS TEAM’S DEFENSIVE IMPROVEMENT: “Defensively, we’ve gotten better since the break. We’ve been in good position to make plays and now we’re making some plays on the ball. As long as we can play defense like we have been, we have a chance to win.”

STREETER ON DUSTY GREEN’S TOUCHDOWN RUN: “On that play, we’re trying to get our skill position guy into space – get him out there fast and let him try to make a move or two. And he did. He tip-toed on the sideline and was able to stay inbounds. Dusty has very good speed, so that kind of took over once he was able to cut back.”

STREETER ON THE CC TITLE CHASE: “Last week, one of the things I said to them was, we’re in Round 4 here and you have no idea what it’s going to be like two weeks from now. Everybody thinks they know, but nobody knows. You just play and let’s see what happens.”

STREETER ON THE RIVALRY WITH DICKINSON: “It’s a big rivalry for a number of reasons. Darwin and I are close friends. The schools are close together. Since their resurgence 15-20 years ago, it seems like those games that we’ve had with them have been tight, crazy games. You can count on both teams to play their hearts out. It’s huge.”
