Hampden-Sydney Week!

Sorry for the delay in updating the blog. After a 2 day conference in the City of Brotherly Love, I can start prepping for the upcoming Bullets game. Don't you just hate it when work gets in the way?!?

Let's start with the season preview taken from D3Football.com's Kick-off Edition:

Hampden-Sydney Tigers

Last playoff appearance:
2007
Last year: 8-3, 5-1 ODAC
Last conference title: 2007
2007 NCAA ranking, total offense: 11
2007 NCAA ranking, total defense: 190
Wins increase from 06-07: Plus-4
Preseason ranking: 36 of 239
Players who started camp: 119
Head coach: Marty Favret, ninth season, 55-26
Starters returning: 13 (five offense, seven defense, one specialists)

Position battle to watch: At least four players will be competing for two spots at wide receiver, which took a hit with the graduation of ODAC Offensive Player of the Year Drew Smith. Leading the way among this year's bunch is senior Zach Miller, who saw playing time every game last season. Junior Adam Gillette and freshmen Mason Simpson and Sean Cavanaugh will be chasing Miller's spot as well as the other opening at wideout.

Pressure is on: Quarterback Corey Sedlar. The signal-caller who stepped into the spotlight last year made significant improvement in spring practices and will be needed to help blend the veteran and rookie elements of the Tigers' offense.

Where did he come from? Craig Warnement's bumps early last year shook up the team's game plan even before the season opener. But the former starting quarterback will be seeing time on the field this year - as a halfback. The 6-foot-1, 210 pound junior has practiced as a backup to standout Josh Simpson.

Their season will be defined by: The game against Randolph-Macon on Nov. 15. Last season, this rivalry game was played for the conference title. A twist here and there, and that's a possibility again this year.

Predicted record: 10-0, 6-0

Capsule: With a three-wideout set and experience under center, the Tigers will again be looking to tap into the potential to be one of the conference's best passing teams. But offensive balance is among their strongest features, and that rests prominently on running back Josh Simpson. Between carries and receptions, the junior found the end zone 27 times in just eight games last year, and he racked up more than 1,600 yards total. Also, to the benefit of both sides of the ball, Hampden-Sydney has drawn its biggest recruiting class ever. Defensively, captain Andrew Sellers and Josh Miller will be filling the void of two All-Conference linebackers. Another conference honoree, T.C. Stevens, rounds out the playing field by reprising his roles as placekicker and punter. Two new coaches join the Tigers staff for 2008: Glen Young, an NFL-veteran who will coach the linebackers, and Zeke Taylor, who will be in charge of the offensive line. Two shortfalls for Hampden-Sydney will be the need to replace All-Conference tight end Josh Baumgartner, who graduated, and defensive back Jamie Edlow, who did not return to the team for his senior year.
