Outlook — Offense
LVC returns six offensive starters from a year ago, key among them junior running back Charlie Parker. The conference’s only 1,000-yard rusher last year, he broke the program record for yards in a season with 1,105. Sophomore quarterback Caleb Fick also returns, and his main targets will be senior wide receiver Sean Donovan and senior tight end Scott Klein. The offensive line will have to replace three starters lost but returns Clint Surgeoner at center and All-MAC tackle Sean Tetreault.

Outlook — Defense
The LVC defense brings back eight starters from a year ago. A strong, experienced linebacking corps will be led by seniors Brian Cottone and Jeff Ochoa and juniors Will Keylor and Bruno Iozzo. The Dutchmen also have experience on the line with Zach Bleiler, Daryl Buck, and Anthony Pezzella returning. In the secondary, three starters return with Bill Dixon and Tim Ridewood on the corners and Andrew Shambach patrolling at strong safety. Dane Eichelberger looks to step into the free safety spot left open by the graduation of Russ DeStefano ’08.

With Honors
LVC had seven student-athletes named to the 2007 All-MAC teams, including first-teamers Charlie Parker, Adam Brossman ’08, Brandon Wagner’08, and Russ DeStefano ’08. Ryan Brennan’08, Sean Tetreault, and Brian Cottone all earned second-team slots.

Parker Breaks Out
Junior tailback Charlie Parker had an outstanding 2007 season, breaking long-standing program records for yards in a season (1,105) and attempts (241) while becoming the MAC’s only 1,000-yard rusher last year. In the season finale against Lycoming, Parker became the first Dutchman in 32 years to run for four touchdowns in a game, matching the feat achieved by Rick Coleman (1975 vs. Swarthmore) and Vern Magnuson (1960 vs. Widener). Parker rolled up 100 yards or more in six games last year, including a 196-yard day against Susquehanna (the third-best in program history), 155 yards against King’s, and 155 versus Lycoming.

Converting
One area LVC will look to improve in this year is third-down efficiency; the Dutchmen converted just 38 of their 133 third-down chances in 2007 (36 percent), while opponents converted 81 of 165 (49 percent). Conversely, Lebanon Valley was much better when gambling on fourth down, making it 41 percent of the time (11 of 27) while holding opponents to just five conversions in 18 tries (28 percent).

Starting Up
The Dutchmen will have 7 positions filled by new starters, including five each on offense. Bryan Lynch (FB), Matt Donley (WR), Andrew Scott (LG), Mike Lamberton (RG), and Jason Sneeringer (RT) will all get their first starts on offense, while on defense, Mark Bowne (NT) and Dane Eichelberger (FS) are expected to get the call.

Last Year
Gettysburg tailback Tom Sturges had a dominant afternoon, rushing 34 times for 220 yards and three touchdowns, to lead the Bullets to a 49-25 victory in last year’s season opener. Charlie Parker led LVC on the ground with 75 yards on 22 carries as Sean Donovan led all receivers with a career-high 137 yards and two touchdowns, one being a 73-yard score. Adam Brossman ’08 caught a first-half touchdown pass, and Joe Brennan also scored on a third-quarter touchdown pass, his first as a Dutchmen.

Series Notes
Today’s game is the 36th meeting all-time between LVC and Gettysburg ... The two teams have split their last four meetings, each winning twice at home ... LVC won the last meeting at Arnold Field, a 13-12 thriller that included a last-second blocked kick by Brian Cottone to preserve the win ... Before LVC’s 7-3 win in 2004, Gettysburg had won 10 in a row ... Head Coach Jim Monos is 2-2 against the Bullets ... Gettysburg leads the all-time series 30-4-1 ... The first meeting in the series was Oct. 1, 1898, a 6-0 Gettysburg victory ... That game was the first true intercollegiate contest in LVC football history ... LVC is 0-2 all-time on Sept. 6 ... LVC’s last two wins over Gettysburg, in 2004 and 2006, were season-openers — before that, the Dutchmen had not won an opener since 1994.

Rules Changes
There are two major clock rules changes in college football this year that will directly impact gameplay. The play clock will now start at 40 seconds from the moment the previous play is blown dead; however, a 25-second clock will be used if play is stopped for an administrative purpose, such as after a timeout or at the start of a quarter. Also changing is the start of the game clock after out-of-bounds plays — the game clock will now start when the ball is marked ready for play, not when it’s snapped (except in the final two minutes of play). Other rule changes this season include banning horsecollar tackles, the elimination of the five-yard facemask penalty, and the elimination of the sideline warning (it is now a five-yard penalty with no warning). Finally, the penalty for a kick-off out-of-bounds has been changed to give the receiving team the ball 30 yards from the spot of the kickoff.

Next Week
The Dutchmen head to the other end of Rt. 422 to take on Ursinus College next Saturday before returning home on Sept. 20 to face Moravian College.
