A Gettysburg Win Would...
• Give the Bullets their third opening day win since 2005
• Give the Bullets their first opening day win on the road since their 31-10 win at Lebanon Valley in 2002
• Improve Gettysburg’s all-time record against Lebanon Valley to 31-4-1

Last Time Out
Gettysburg closed its 2007 season at Carnegie Mellon University in the ECAC Southwest Bowl. The Bullets led for the entire game before the Tartans rallied to score the go-ahead touchdown with 2:09 left to come away with a 21-20 victory. In his last collegiate outing, tailback Tom Sturges ’08 rushed for 114 yards and two touchdowns. He finished his career ranked second in school history with 4,312 yards rushing. Defensively, defensive end Conor Quinn closed the season with an outstanding game, racking up career-highs of 15 tackles and 2.5 sacks to go with a pair of fumble recoveries.

Lebanon Valley wrapped up its 2007 campaign with a 28-14 victory over Lycoming College to finish the year at 4-6. Charlie Parker rushed for 155 yards and tied a school record with four touchdown runs. He also broke LVC’s single-season rushing record with 1,105 yards.

Last LVC-Gettysburg Meeting
Tom Sturges ’08 rushed for 220 yards and three touchdowns while catching an additional touchdown pass, and Matt Flynn threw all four of his touchdown passes in the first half, leading the Gettysburg College football team to a 49-25 season-opening victory at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium last season. Gettysburg, which racked up 537 yards of total offense, never trailed after jumping to a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Bullets led 35-25 at halftime following a wild second quarter that featured seven combined touchdowns. Lebanon Valley, which accumulated 440 yards of total offense, was led by wide receiver Sean Donovan, who pulled in six passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns, including a 73-yarder. Tailback Charlie Parker rushed for 75 yards on 22 carries for the Flying Dutchmen.

Experienced Offense
Gettysburg returns seven starters on offense, including two-year starting quarterback Matt Flynn. The Bullets also bring back four of five starting offensive linemen and a pair of starting wings in sophomore Charles Curcio and Ricky Manigat.

First Start for Mutunga
For the first time since 2004, the Bullets will open the season with a player besides Tom Sturges ’08 as its starting tailback, and sophomore Jamel Mutunga will get the call on Saturday. Last season Mutunga made the most of his only game at the position, filling in for an injured Sturges at Franklin & Marshall College and rushing for 114 yards, including a 69-yarder, and two touchdowns.

Six Starters Back on Defense
On the defensive side of the ball, the Bullets return six starters, including its entire defensive line in senior end Josh Jerrold, junior tackle Anthony Pastore, junior tackle Sebastian Sullivan, and senior end Conor Quinn. Junior Tim Widdoes is only returning starter at linebacker, and sophomore safety Nick Duerr represents the Bullets’ lone returning starter in the secondary.

With Honors
Gettysburg was well-represented on the 2007 All-Centennial Conference team. Tailback Tom Sturges ’08 was named to the first team for the third year in a row, and he was also tabbed the offensive player of the year, just the third in school history and the first since tailback Paul Smith ’00 in 1999. Also capturing first-team honors was left tackle James Russell ’08 while kicker Josh Huson and defensive end Josh Jerrold were second-team picks. In addition, left guard Lou Mastrini, defensive end Conor Quinn, and linebacker Harold Barton ’08 were honorable mention selections.

Moving the Chains
The Bullets led the Centennial Conference in numerous offensive categories in 2007, including rushing offense (248.6 ypg), total offense (404.7 ypg), and first downs (231). Gettysburg, which also finished second the conference in scoring offense (29.5), finished the year ranked 21st in the Division III in rushing.

First-Quarter Success
Gettysburg outscored its opponents 83-28 in the first quarter last season. The Bullets went five games from Sept. 14 through Oct. 13 without allowing a first-quarter point, outscoring its opponents 35-0 over that stretch before Dickinson scored a first-quarter touchdown against the Bullets on Oct. 20.

Protecting the Quarterback
Thanks in part to the offensive line of James Russell ’08, senior Lou Mastrini, sophomore Matt DeFranco, junior Alex Bonder, and senior Sam Walthall, junior Matt Flynn was sacked only 12 times last season. Gettysburg led the Centennial Conference and tied for 19th in Division III in sacks against.

Sack Attack
Gettysburg reached opposing quarterbacks for a sack 29 times last year, a mark that ranked second in the Centennial Conference. Senior defensive end Josh Jerrold finished second in the conference with 8.0 sacks while fellow end Conor Quinn was third with 7.5.

Special Teams Specialist
Sophomore wing/return specialist Charles Curcio averaged 11.1 yards per punt return last season, a mark that ranked 37th in Division III. He has also averaged an impressive 23.1 yards per kick return. Curcio exceeded 100 all-purpose yards in four games and has scored six touchdowns for the season.

Tough Against the Run
When Franklin & Marshall’s Ryan Murray rushed for 240 yards against Gettysburg on Nov. 10, it marked the only time last season the team allowed a 100-yard rusher. Prior to that contest, the Bullets had not allowed a 100-yard rusher in 11 games.

Giving it the Boot
Senior kicker Josh Huson has enjoyed a solid career at kicker for the Bullets. Last season he drilled 38 of 39 extra-point attempts and was 12-for-19 on field goals with a season-long 42-yarder. His 12 field goals tied Gettysburg’s single-season record. Huson led the Centennial Conference in kick scoring with 74 points and was 18th in Division III with 1.1 field goals per game.

Climbing the Charts
Even though he is only beginning his junior season, quarterback Matt Flynn has climbed into third on Gettysburg’s career passing list. The school’s top-five are listed below:
Player Years Com-Att-Int Yds TDs
Dennis Flaherty 1997-00 368-808-47 5,136 33
Jim Ward 1963-65 230-466-16 3,174 32
Matt Flynn 2006- 224-460-17 3 ,081 24
Herb Ruby 1967-69 253-557-37 3,002 24
Brett Gipe 1981-83 174-375-28 2,680 26

Head of the Class
With the Bullets’ 27-20 win over Moravian on Oct. 6, 2007, Gettysburg head coach Barry Streeter picked up his 78th Centennial Conference victory, making him the all-time winningest coach in conference history. He passed former Franklin & Marshall coach Tom Gilburg, who went 77-60-1 from 1983-2002. Streeter has gone 80-81-3 in Centennial play since the inception of the conference in 1983. Streeter is also the longest-tenured and winningest football coach in Gettysburg history. He surpassed Hen Bream (1927-51), who coached for 22 seasons, in 2000. Streeter won his 105th career game against Muhlenberg in 1995 to take over the career wins lead. Now in his 30th season as head coach, he has a 147-142-5 (.509) career record.

Familiar Territory
Head coach Barry Streeter will make a return to his alma mater when the Bullets visit the Flying Dutchmen on Saturday. Streeter is a 1971 graduate of Lebanon Valley, where he was a standout football and lacrosse player. He was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2003.

Scouting Lebanon Valley
Lebanon Valley is coming off a 4-6 season in which it tied for fifth in the Middle Atlantic Conference at 3-4. After starting the season 1-5, the Dutchmen won three of their final four games of the season. As a sophomore, tailback Charlie Parker set a single-season school record with 1,105 yards rushing to go with 11 touchdowns. Parker helped LVC lead the MAC in rushing, averaging 169.2 yards per game. The Dutchmen return five additional starters on offense, including sophomore quarterback Caleb Fick, who threw seven touchdowns and 13 interceptions in five starts, and junior tackle Sean Tetreault, a second team All-MAC selection. Defensively, senior linebacker Brian Cottone will lead the way for a unit that brings back eight starters. A second team All-MAC pick last year, he led the team with 93 tackles, including 2.0 for loss, to go with two interceptions, two pass breakups, two fumble recoveries, a forced fumble, and a blocked kick. Also returning are senior safety Andrew Shambach (70 tackles) and junior linebacker Will Keylor (69 tackles).
