McDaniel Week

After enjoying a bye week, it's back to business as the Bullets begin preparation for a visit from McDaniel as the season continues with our first Centennial Conference match-up.

The following was taken from the preseason Kick Off edition of D3Football.com:

McDaniel Green Terror

Last playoff appearance: 2001

Last conference title: 2004, shared five ways

Head coach: Tim Keating, 13th year, 86-37-3

Starters returning: 16 (eight offense, seven defense, one special teams)

Position battle to watch: Jamie Unger is just about the only guaranteed starter at the wide receiver position; ball-catchers beyond that are up for grabs. Keep an eye on the stat sheets after the first two games to determine who might be stepping up.

Pressure is on: Quarterback Brad Baer. With two years as the starter under his belt, it is time for the junior to assume a leadership role in the offense. The rushing of reigning player of the year Broderick Maybank is expected against any defense, but the pressure to develop a dual threat offense and restore the once vaunted McDaniel aerial show falls squarely on Baer’s shoulders.

Their season will be defined by: Talk about unknown quantity — McDaniel doesn't face any of the other three top contenders in the league until Week 9.

Predicted record: 7-3, 4-2

Capsule: McDaniel (nee Western Maryland) reeled off five consecutive conference championships from 1997-2001, accumulating a 33-1 record in conference matches over that time. The last two seasons have been productive, but not to the level that struck fear in the hearts of opponents when catching wind that the Terror was on its way to town. Maybank averaged 120 yards in ten contests for McDaniel, the first 1000-yard rusher in Tim Keating’s tenure in Westminster. This proves two things: Maybank is one heck of a rusher, and McDaniel’s passing game has weakened considerably (81.6 yards per game for Baer). A solid performance from the offensive line, which lost two all-conference selections, could allow Baer to flourish in the pocket, enabling McDaniel to emerge from their current doldrums. Lackluster protection could signify the difference between a 7-3 season and a 3-7 mark. Look for the former given Keating’s ability to rally the troops to respect the winning program he has built.
