Lebanon Valley-Gettysburg to kick off season

Lebanon Valley's history with Gettysburg has not been a good one.

In 33 meetings, which began in 1898, Gettysburg owns a 29-3-1 advantage.

Last year was just more of the same as Gettysburg opened the season with a 34-27 win over the visiting Flying Dutchmen.

The two teams will open their season for a sixth straight time at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Lebanon Valley. Gettysburg owns a 4-1 record over those five games.

"The season opener usually sets the tone for the kind of season you can expect," said Lebanon Valley coach Jim Monos, whose last victory over Gettysburg came three seasons ago when he returned to LVC for a second coaching stint after serving eight seasons as an assistant at Bloomsburg.

"We lost some close games last year [including one-point losses to Lycoming and Albright in a 2-8 season]. Otherwise it would have been a different season for us."

One player hoping to help turn this year's record around with an opening-game win is junior wide receiver Adam Brossman from Lebanon.

Brossman caught a 7-yard touchdown pass that gave Lebanon Valley a temporary 27-26 lead over Gettysburg on the first play of the fourth quarter last season.

"You always head into that season opener with plenty of optimism," said Brossman. "It's especially important to win on your own turf. You don't want somebody to come in there and beat you at home. I think our team will get stronger as the season goes on, but it's always important to win your season opener."

Gettysburg coach Barry Streeter, who is 10th among active Division III coaches with 136 wins in 27 seasons, realizes how important special teams play has been to a number of those wins, including last year's return to coaching after a season away for personal reasons.

"We always try to emphasize special teams play as an important part of our game plan," said Streeter, whose Bullets scored a touchdown on an 86-yard kickoff return in the first quarter against Dickinson last year.

Gettysburg sophomore Nick McConnell, who backs up Tom Sturges at tailback, was part of the unit that produced the touchdown.

"Playing against Lebanon Valley is a little special for me," said McConnell, who played high school football some 10 minutes away from LVC at Cedar Crest High School.

"I played against a lot of their guys, like Adam Brossman. So it's a special kind of rivalry for me."
