GCFPC WEEKLY UPDATE – Hampden-Sydney v. Gettysburg

GCFPC WEEKLY UPDATE – Hampden-Sydney v. Gettysburg

The Bullets return to Gettysburg this Saturday for their 2006 season home opener against the Hampden-Sydney Tigers. The Tigers have dominated this series in the won/loss column in recent years, but have had some real “scares” from the Bullets, especially when they are away from the friendly confines (and officiating) of Farmville, Virginia. This week is an opportunity for Gettysburg to shake off last week’s tough loss to LVC and make a big statement. A game note appears on the College’s website.

TAILGATING: This Saturday also begins the home Tailgating season. In recent years, Gettysburg Tailgating has blossomed into a vibrant tradition at which all Gettysburg Football families are welcome. Please come and introduce yourself to others. New families, in particular, are asked to attend.

As with all home games, Tailgating will take place at the picnic Pavilion next to Quarry Lake (at the stadium end of Lincoln Avenue, turn right to the gravel parking lot near the covered pavilion). The Pavilion is an open-air, covered area with picnic tables, and the Parents Club will provide grills. We will start gathering for the Tailgates at about 10:45 a.m. and close things down for the games by 12:45 p.m. (game time is 1:00) -- but feel free to come to the Tailgates at any time. Anyone who can arrive early to help set up would be most appreciated. The Parents Club furnishes some hot and cold finger food before the game (arriving at 11:00 a.m.), but each family should plan to provide their own basic food and drinks for the day. This week, Senior and Junior parents are asked to bring food to share, although other contributions certainly would be appreciated.

Tailgating will also take place after the home games at the Pavilion from approximately 4:00 p.m. into the evening. The players are invited after the games and they are hungry (no surprise there), so keep this in mind when bringing food (the Parents Club will provide some additional food for all and drinks for the players). Other than drinks for players and cheerleaders after the game, beverages of choice are BYO. While alcohol may be consumed by adults at the Pavilion, GC Safety and Security will enforce alcohol laws anywhere else on campus (e.g. no walking to the stadium with a beer in hand!).

The season’s Tailgate food contribution schedule is as follows (** PLEASE NOTE Junior parents have been added to this week’s tailgate potluck):

September 9th -- Senior AND Junior Parents
September 23rd -- Sophomore Parents
October 14th -- Freshman Parents – families with last names starting in “A” though “L”
October 21st -- (Family Weekend) Food furnished by the College at the rear of the stadium before the game
November 11th -- Freshmen Parents – families with last names starting in “M” though “Z”

MEMBERSHIP: If you haven’t yet sent in your form and dues for membership in the Gettysburg College Football Parents Club, please do so now! If you need another form, let us know and we will email one to you – forms will also be available at this week’s Tailgate.

BULLETS MERCHANDISE: Orders placed by this past Tuesday should be available for pick up this Saturday (see Ralph or Debbie Pastore). There will be a Bullets football merchandise table at the Tailgate this week and at all home games. A very limited quantity of merchandise will be available for purchase, but pre-orders are the norm. You can place a pre-order at this week’s game or request a merchandise list / order form by email. Orders this week will be filled for the next home game.

ROCHESTER GAME – HOTEL:
Support for the Bullets at away games is one of the most important things the Parents Club can do for the team and cheerleaders. Please consider attending the Rochester game. It is a long trip for most families, but you can make a mini vacation out of it! For those romantically inclined who are willing to drive an extra 1 hour, 20 minutes, you can make a side trip to Niagara Falls! However, just a trip to away games is a fun excursion and the kids really appreciate the effort.

The Parents Club has secured at a great group rate a block of rooms for the Rochester game (September 16th at noon). The room block is at the Crown Plaza in downtown Rochester (about 3 miles from the U.R. football stadium). This is the same hotel at which the team will be staying. You can book rooms by calling the Reservations Manager’s direct line (Patty Vahue at 585-324-0038; pvahue@rcpny.com) and asking for a room under the Gettysburg College Parents Block. You can get either a two-queen or one-king bed room at the flat rate of $72 per room plus tax (up to 4 people). (Onsite parking is $3.50/day). These rooms usually rent for $139-154. This is the same hotel where we stayed two years ago and is very nice. The block on these rooms will be guaranteed only until Sunday, September 10th, so make a reservation soon (there is a 24 hour cancellation notice policy). After that date, the rate will still be available if there are available rooms (there is a big event in Rochester, so the hotel will likely fill up). The hotel’s website is www.rcpny.com.

ACTION PHOTOS: Bill Dowling, a professional photographer, has agreed again this year to take action photos of players and cheerleaders at each home game. Each week, Bill’s photos will appear on his website (www.dowlingphoto.com) and can be ordered for very reasonable prices (5x7 @ $11; 8x10 @ $16; 11x14 @ $27). Bill’s website is easy to navigate (start with “Bullets Football” on the right margin of his home page). We expect that every player and cheerleader will appear on the website during the season for that special picture.

VOLUNTEERS/SUGGESTIONS: We are hoping everyone will help out with merchandise sales/orders at home games, tailgate clean-up, tailgate food contributions, etc. throughout the season. New families are especially invited to help with these activities (none of which are especially burdensome). Suggestions are always welcome. In particular, new Club members may have fresh ideas to improve what the Parents Club has to offer.

J.V.GAMES - We are attempting to get the J.V. Schedule and we will post it as soon as we do. If anyone knows of the schedule, please let us know. Thanks!

ALUMNI FAMILIES
- Please feel comfortable to join us at any Bullets game. Let us know if you want to sign up as an alumni member of the GCFPC (dues are only $20).

We hope to see as many Bullets fans as possible this Saturday – let’s show the team and cheerleaders great support.
Go Bullets!!!!!!!!!
