It's a delicate thing trying to blend a large number of freshmen into a veteran roster that had a pretty good run a year ago.
Expectations are high for those freshmen. Some of them need to start. It can get dicey.
That was the chief concern of Lebanon Valley football coach Jim Monos headed into the second season of his second tenure with the Flying Dutchmen.
"You have guys on the team who have positions and these [freshmen] are coming in," Monos said. "But it's really worked out well."
Monos will have a better idea after tomorrow's season opener at Gettysburg at 1 p.m.
"I'm saying we're a better team but Gettysburg is a better team," Monos said.
His Flying Dutchmen went 4-6 last season, 3-6 in the Middle Atlantic Conference.
Meanwhile, the Bullets struggled to a 1-9 finish, 1-5 in the Centennial Conference, while coach Barry Streeter was away on a personal leave.
"Barry is back and his team is playing with a lot of emotion," Monos said. "It's the old cliche, the team that makes the least amount of mistakes will win."
Dan Kelly returns at quarterback for the Dutch. He was 147-283-15 passing last season for 1,900 yards and 18 touchdowns.
"He's really picked up the offense," Monos said. "He gets us in the right place and he's a very good athlete."
The LVC defense will be the first to experience Gettysburg's new Delaware Wing-T/spread offense hybrid.
"They've got a nice mixture going so it's very difficult to get a beat," Monos said. "The biggest concern I have is if our kids think too much, they don't play hard. That will hurt you and they will take advantage."
