Gettysburg College Football Parents Club Weekly Update

GCFPC WEEKLY UPDATE

Game 1 - 2005

The Bullets kick off their 113th season of college football this Saturday in a home game featuring the return of Coach Barry Streeter to the sidelines. After a strong showing in last week’s scrimmage against Shenandoah University, the team has good reason to be optimistic about this season. An in-depth preview of the game should appear later this week on the Football page of the Gettysburg College website.

THE GETTYSBURG COLLEGE FOOTBALL PARENTS CLUB (“GCFPC”)

MEMBERSHIP:
We are hoping for 100% participation by GC Football families in the GCFPC this year. The response after the coach’s meeting from new families was especially exciting. If you have not yet joined, please send in your membership form as soon as possible. (Dues of $40 cover an entire family for the whole season and help pay for pre- and post-game tailgates organized by the Club).

KELLY JONES:
We always knew we had the best equipment manager in college football. Now the rest of the NCAA also knows this. Kelly Jones, the team’s equipment manager (a very big and important job) recently was selected as the National Equipment Manager of the Year. This award covers all 3 divisions of college athletics. Obviously, it is a huge honor for Kelly, the College and football program. Give Kelly a “way to go” on this when you can – she is truly dedicated to our players.

TAILGATING:
This Saturday also begins the home Tailgating season. In recent years, Gettysburg Tailgating has blossomed into a vibrant tradition to which all Gettysburg Football families are welcome. Please come and introduce yourself to others. New families, in particular, are asked to attend.

As with all (except one) home games, Tailgating will take place at the picnic Pavilion next to Quarry Lake (at the stadium end of Lincoln Avenue, turn right to the gravel parking lot near the covered pavilion). The Pavilion is an open-air, covered area with picnic tables, and the Parents Club will provide grills. We will start gathering for the Tailgates at about 10:45 a.m. and close things down for the games by 12:45 p.m. (game time is 1:00; entrance is free) -- but feel free to come to the Tailgates at any time. Anyone who can arrive early to help set up would be most appreciated. The Parents Club furnishes some hot and cold finger food before and after the game, but each family should plan to provide their own basic food and drinks for the day. This week, Senior parents are asked to bring food to share, although other contributions certainly would be appreciated.

Tailgating will also take place after the home games at the Pavilion from approximately 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The players are invited after the games and they are hungry (no surprise there), so keep this in mind when bringing food (the Parents Club will then be providing some additional food for all but drinks only for the players/cheerleaders). Other than drinks provided by the Club solely for players and cheerleaders after the game, beverages of choice are BYOB. While alcohol may be consumed by adults at the Pavilion, GC Safety and Security will enforce alcohol laws anywhere else on campus (e.g. no walking to the stadium with a beer in hand!). Of course, no consumption of alcohol by minors can be tolerated.

The season’s Tailgate food contribution schedule is as follows:

September 3rd Senior Parents (Pavilion)

September 17th Junior Parents (**Tailgate in grassy area b/w The Attic and the Baseball field – west end of Lincoln Avenue by the West Bldg)

October 8th Sophomore Parents (Pavilion)

October 29th (Family Weekend) Food furnished by the College at the Stadium before the game (Pavilion postgame)

November 5th Freshmen Parents (Pavilion)

BULLETS MERCHANDISE:
Samples of Bullets football merchandise will be available at the game this week and at all home games. A limited quantity of items will be available for purchase, but pre-orders are the norm. Most orders can be filled by the next home game.

50/50 RAFFLE:
In order to help raise some extra money to meet the unusual cost this year of senior gifts (we have 22 seniors, while we had 8 last year and 14 the year before), we will be conducting a 50/50 raffle at home tailgates. Bruce Phillips, a Senior Dad, has kindly agreed to coordinate this effort. We will be relying on Senior parents to take the lead on this.

We are instituting two rules on this: (1) you do not need to be present to win, so you can still participate even if you need to leave early from a tailgate party; (2) the Club will not accept back the winner’s money – too often charitable raffle winners feel compelled to return their winnings – we do not want people to be pressured to do so and we want to thereby encourage greater participation. Any other suggestions as to “rules’ or format would be most appreciated. Also, if there is any strong opposition to this, let us know.

ACTION PHOTOS:
Bill Dowling, a professional photographer, has agreed again this year to take action photos of players and cheerleaders at each home game. He may even catch some away games. Each week, his photos will appear on his website: www.dowlingphoto.com and can be ordered for very reasonable prices. In fact, Bill has already posted photos from last Saturday’s scrimmage. Bill’s website is easy to navigate (start with “Bullets Football” on the right margin of his home page). We expect that every player and cheerleader will appear on the website during the season for that special picture.

VOLUNTEERS/SUGGESTIONS:
We are hoping everyone will help out with merchandise sales/orders at home games, tailgate clean-up, tailgate food contributions, etc. throughout the season. Also, we are in immediate need of specific volunteers to “shadow” current Club leaders this year with a view toward taking over a position next year. New families are especially invited to get involved (none of the positions are especially burdensome).

Suggestions are always welcome. In particular, new Club members may have fresh ideas to improve what the Parents Club has to offer.

DENISON GAME – HOTEL / TAILGATE:
Support for the Bullets at away games is one of the most important things the Parents Club can do for the team and cheerleaders. Please consider attending the Denison game. It is a long trip for most families, but you can make a mini vacation out of it! The Parents Club has secured at a group rate on a block of rooms for that weekend. Please respond to this email if you think you will be attending the game and interested in a room (in the same hotel as the players). Details will follow shortly on this.

The GC Alumni office is planning a Tailgate event before the game and will be asking us to join them (more details to come).

NEW BANNER:
The Parents Club will be inaugurating this week a new Banner (“Go Bullets”) to support the team. We are looking for someone who would be willing to be the “Banner Keeper” – to put it up at the Tailgates and at the Stadium (also, hopefully, to ensure that it safely makes it to away games; this does not require an away game commitment, so long as you can arrange with another family to help out).

ALUMNI FAMILIES -
Please feel comfortable to join us at any Bullets game. We miss you and would love to see you. Let us know if you want to sign up as an alumni member of the GCFPC (dues are only $20 for you).

We hope to see as many Bullets fans as possible at the game this week - big support from the stands would be awesome.

Go Bullets!!!!!!!!!
