From the Gettysburg College Website:

Football Team Announces 2008 Captains

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College football team has named its captains for the 2008 season, as announced by head coach Barry Streeter.

Rising junior quarterback Matt Flynn (Northfield, N.J./Mainland Regional), senior tackle Sam Walthall (Uniondale, N.Y./Woodlands), and senior defensive ends Josh Jerrold (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury East) and Conor Quinn (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) will lead the Bullets in 2008.

In his second year as a starter, Flynn passed for 1,535 yards and 10 touchdowns last season, completing 45.3% (111-245) of his passes. He was also the team’s second-leading rusher, finishing with 419 yards, including a 50-yard touchdown run at Johns Hopkins. In his top performance of the season, he threw all four his touchdowns in the first half to go with 265 passing yards in a 49-25 win over Lebanon Valley College.

For his career, Flynn has thrown for 3,081 yards and 24 touchdowns while rushing for an additional 529 yards and four TDs.

Walthall started all 11 games at right tackle a year ago and was a key component of an offensive line that led the conference in several categories and finished among the best in Division III. The Bullets led the Centennial in rushing for the third year in a row, and their 250.9 rushing yards per game average was 21st nationally. Gettysburg was also tops in the conference and 44th in Division III in total offense (404.7). In addition, Walthall was part of an offensive line that led the Centennial and tied for 19th nationally in sacks against (1.09 per game).

Jerrold returns after starting all 11 games at defensive end in 2007. A Second Team All-Centennial Conference selection, he finished second in the conference in sacks (8.0) and was seventh in tackles for loss (13.5). He closed out his junior campaign with a strong performance, making 12 tackles, including 2.5 for loss and one sack, in the Bullets 21-20 ECAC Southwest Bowl loss at Carnegie Mellon. In his second season as a starter, he finished fourth on the team with 63 tackles, including 13.5 for a loss of 57 yards.

Quinn also registered an impressive junior season last year, capturing All-Centennial Conference Honorable Mention recognition. He recorded 80 tackles in 2007 – the third-best total on the team. He particularly singled out offensive players in the backfield, tying for third in the conference with 16.5 tackles for a loss of 66 yards. He was also third in the conference in sacks with 7.5 totaling 48 yards. Quinn saved up his top performance for the ECAC Southwest Bowl as well, when he posted a dominating performance with a career-high 15 tackles to go with 2.5 sacks.

Gettysburg opens its season on Saturday, Sept. 6, when it visits Lebanon Valley in a non-conference game.
